APC Gives Wike Political Traffic Light: ‘Either You Are In APC Or You Are Out’

The political traffic around Nigeria’s 2027 elections has taken another colourful turn, as Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has told FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to make his political position clear over the Rainbow Coalition. Lawal’s message was blunt: supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while remaining connected to politicians contesting on other party platforms has, in the eyes of APC governors, created a political puzzle that needs an answer.

APC Governors Draw the Political Line

Lawal said the APC governors had made their position clear and would not change it because of Wike’s arguments. In his telling, political loyalty cannot operate like a television remote control, switching between channels whenever the programme changes. He insisted that anyone claiming to be on the APC side should openly support the party and its candidates.

The governor went further when asked whether the governors were effectively asking Wike to join the APC. His answer was simply, “Exactly.” He also said he intended to discuss Wike’s political position with President Bola Tinubu, describing the need for a “clear line” regarding where the FCT minister belongs politically.

Wike Says Rainbow Is About Tinubu, Not APC

Wike, meanwhile, has maintained that the Rainbow Coalition is designed to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s 2027 presidential re-election rather than replace or control the APC. He has argued that supporting Tinubu at the presidential level does not prevent other political parties, including the PDP, from fielding candidates in governorship and legislative contests.

That position is precisely where the political mathematics becomes interesting. The APC Governors Forum has said it will not support alliances capable of weakening the party or its candidates, while Wike maintains that the coalition can support Tinubu without requiring every politician involved to abandon their original parties. In other words, one side is talking about party discipline while the other is talking about a broader presidential support platform.

The disagreement has already grown beyond a simple exchange of political statements, with recent reporting describing the Rainbow Coalition as part of a wider contest over campaign structures and electoral machinery ahead of 2027. For now, the political rainbow has produced more arguments about its colours than agreement over where each colour should be placed.

As the 2027 political season approaches, Lawal’s latest challenge puts Wike’s cross-party strategy under renewed scrutiny, while Wike continues to insist that his support for Tinubu is clear.
