Terrorists Arrive Gajiram Military Base With Big Ambition, Leave With Smaller Attendance List

What was apparently planned as a dramatic midnight attempt to overrun a military base in Gajiram, Borno State, reportedly ended with the attackers discovering that the Nigerian Army had not included “surrender the base” in its evening programme. Troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled an ISWAP assault on the Forward Operating Base in Nganzai Local Government Area during the early hours of August 10, with the Army saying several terrorists were neutralised and the attackers eventually withdrew after suffering heavy casualties.

The Terrorists Midnight Plan That Met a Military Reception

According to the Army, the attack began at about 12:20 a.m., when a large number of ISWAP fighters attempted to breach the troops’ position and overrun the base. Instead of finding an empty compound waiting for them, however, the attackers encountered soldiers who responded with determined fire and forced them to retreat.

The military said several terrorists were neutralised during the engagement, while weapons, ammunition and communication gadgets were recovered. Surveillance footage reportedly also showed casualties being evacuated by retreating attackers, although the Army said assessment of the exact losses was still ongoing.

As Terrorists Attack Continue Base Remains Under Watch as Troops Stay Alert

The engagement was not without consequences for the military. The Army reported that a few troops were injured after part of the defensive position was temporarily breached, while some combat equipment and vehicles were damaged. The injured personnel were subsequently airlifted and reported to be stable and receiving medical attention.

The latest incident comes against the backdrop of continuing attacks on military positions in Borno. Earlier this year, troops also repelled attacks on military bases in other parts of the state, illustrating the continuing pressure on Operation Hadin Kai even as security forces maintain operations against insurgent groups. The satirical lesson from Gajiram is therefore simple: attacking a military base may look impressive on paper, but the paper may quickly become the casualty report.

OGM News NG will continue to monitor developments as security forces assess the aftermath and maintain heightened vigilance around Gajiram and surrounding communities. Readers should watch for further verified updates, because in the North-East, one failed attack can be the beginning of another security operation rather than the end of the story.
