Jungle Justice Over Firewood? Traditional Ruler’s Son Arrested as Burn Victim Fights for Life in Okodi

Jungle Justice has once again become the centre of public concern after police arrested the son of a traditional ruler over allegations that a man accused of stealing firewood was set ablaze in Okodi community, Bayelsa State. While investigators continue to piece together exactly what happened, the disturbing incident has reignited national concerns about citizens taking the law into their own hands instead of allowing the justice system to determine guilt or innocence.

Jungle Justice or Attempted Murder? Bayelsa Community Demands Answers

The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed that Mr. Ibobuminate Oweifa, identified as the son of the traditional ruler of Okodi community in Ogbia Local Government Area, was arrested following allegations that Godgift Biko sustained severe burns during an encounter linked to accusations of attempted firewood theft. According to police, officers responded promptly after receiving reports of the incident, rescued the victim, secured immediate medical attention and took the suspect into custody while investigations commenced.

Police Commissioner Iyamah Edebor stated that the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded. Authorities also emphasised that the suspect’s account of events remains only one version under investigation and should not be treated as established fact. The command publicly condemned every form of Jungle Justice, warning that violence and self-help measures capable of endangering lives will not be tolerated under the law.

Courtroom Needed, Not a Bonfire: Jungle Justice Goes Too Far

Beyond the immediate criminal investigation, the incident has drawn attention to a recurring challenge facing many communities where allegations of theft sometimes escalate into violent retaliation before law enforcement can intervene. Legal experts and security agencies have repeatedly warned that even where a person is suspected of committing an offence, only the courts possess the authority to determine guilt and impose punishment. Extrajudicial actions frequently transform an initial allegation into a far more serious criminal investigation involving assault, attempted murder or homicide.

The latest arrest also reflects the Bayelsa State Police Command’s recent emphasis on responding quickly to criminal activity while discouraging unlawful conduct by individuals. In separate recent operations, the command has announced arrests connected with other offences and has consistently urged residents to report suspected crimes instead of resorting to personal vengeance. The handling of the Okodi case is therefore likely to be closely watched as another test of the state’s commitment to due process and equal application of the law, irrespective of social or traditional status.

As investigators continue gathering evidence, the courts will ultimately determine responsibility based on the facts presented. Until then, the Jungle Justice allegations surrounding Okodi remain a powerful reminder that allegations alone should never replace lawful investigation, and OGM News Nigeria will continue monitoring developments as the case progresses.
