Federal Government officials are considering strict travel measures, including possible flight restrictions from Ebola-affected countries, as concerns rise over the spread of the deadly virus across parts of Africa. The Federal Government move follows emergency consultations involving the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Ministry of Interior, and Lagos State authorities aimed at preventing another Ebola outbreak in Nigeria.
The Federal Government response comes amid growing international concern after fresh Ebola-related deaths and suspected infections were reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Officials say President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has already been briefed on the evolving situation, with assurances that all necessary preventive actions would be implemented to protect Nigerians from another major public health emergency.
Prevention of Ebola Outbreak
The Federal Government is reportedly exploring several protective measures, including restricting flights from countries classified as high-risk zones, isolating travellers showing symptoms of Ebola, and strengthening health screening systems at airports and border entry points nationwide.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, stated that the Federal Government cannot afford to take unnecessary risks considering the deadly history of Ebola and the speed at which outbreaks can spread internationally. According to him, prevention remains the most effective strategy, especially after Nigeria’s previous experience with Ebola placed enormous pressure on public health systems.
Preparedness for Ebola Outbreak
The Federal Government has also directed health and immigration agencies to intensify surveillance operations across airports, seaports, and land borders. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo confirmed that immigration officials would work closely with the NCDC to strengthen early detection procedures and emergency response systems.
NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris warned that Ebola remains a highly dangerous virus requiring immediate isolation, rapid response, and strong public awareness campaigns. He disclosed that the Federal Government has already activated preparedness plans across all 36 states while healthcare workers remain on high alert for possible suspected cases.
Global health authorities recently confirmed multiple Ebola deaths and hundreds of suspected fatalities linked to the latest outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo since mid-May. Health experts warn that increasing regional travel and cross-border movement could raise the risk of wider transmission if strict preventive measures are not implemented quickly.
Despite the seriousness of the Ebola threat, Nigerians online reacted with the country’s familiar mix of anxiety and humor, joking that the Federal Government may soon turn airport hand sanitizers into “national security equipment.” Beneath the jokes, however, the growing Ebola concern highlights the urgent need for vigilance, public cooperation, and rapid response measures to prevent another devastating outbreak in Nigeria.
