A coalition of civil society organisations in Nigeria has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider and relax its election timetable ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing concerns over inclusivity, fairness, and adequate preparation time for stakeholders.
The coalition, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, argued that the current electoral schedule may limit participation, particularly for smaller political parties and new entrants seeking to engage meaningfully in the democratic process. According to the group, a rigid timetable risks undermining the credibility of the elections if stakeholders are not given sufficient time to comply with regulatory requirements.
Stakeholders and the coalition emphasized that elections in a diverse democracy such as Nigeria require deliberate planning and flexibility to accommodate logistical challenges, voter education, and political engagement. They warned that failing to address these concerns early could lead to disputes, reduced voter confidence, and potential legal challenges.
Coalition Launch of Poll Tracking App to Enhance Transparency
In a related development, the Situation Room announced the launch of a new poll tracking application designed to improve transparency and accountability throughout the electoral cycle. The platform is expected to provide real-time updates, monitor electoral processes, and document incidents during elections.
According to the organisers, the app will serve as a tool for citizens, observers, and civil society actors to report irregularities and access verified information. It is also intended to strengthen public trust by ensuring that electoral processes are more visible and subject to scrutiny.
The coalition noted that technological innovations such as the tracking app are essential in modern elections, particularly in addressing misinformation and enhancing civic participation. However, they stressed that technology alone cannot compensate for structural issues, including inadequate timelines and uneven political competition.
IPAC Calls for Competitive Elections, Not “Coronation”
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the coalition also weighed in on the matter, urging INEC to prioritise fairness and competitiveness in the 2027 elections. The council warned against what it described as a “coronation-style” election, where outcomes appear predetermined rather than earned through genuine democratic contest.
IPAC representatives highlighted the need for a level playing field that allows all political parties to campaign effectively and present their candidates to the electorate. They argued that democracy thrives when voters are given real choices, not limited options shaped by structural disadvantages.
Furthermore, the council called for continuous coalition engagement between INEC, political parties, and civil society groups to address emerging concerns well ahead of the election cycle. Such collaboration, they noted, would help prevent tensions and ensure that electoral processes reflect the will of the people.
As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections, the civil society coalition calls for reforming the electoral timetable and strengthening transparency mechanisms are gaining momentum. Observers believe that early dialogue and adjustments by INEC could play a crucial role in ensuring credible, inclusive, and competitive elections across the country.
