Only Tinubu Can Sack Me, Not Critics — Wike Declares as Obio/Akpor Reasserts Political Clout

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly dismissed calls for his removal from office, insisting that only President Bola Tinubu possesses the constitutional authority to sack him. Speaking during a thank-you visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike underscored his belief that political power is acquired through strength, strategic calculation, and popular support rather than sentiment or emotion. His remarks, delivered before party leaders, traditional rulers, women, and youths, have once again drawn national attention to the enduring political influence of Obio/Akpor and the deepening power struggle within Rivers State politics.

The visit forms part of Wike’s ongoing tour of the state’s 23 local government areas, aimed at appreciating residents for their support during the 2023 general elections and mobilising backing for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls. Against the backdrop of a lingering political crisis in Rivers State, Wike’s statements have been interpreted as both a defence of his current position in the Federal Government and a warning to critics within and outside the state.

Politics, Power, and the Obio/Akpor Factor

Wike used the occasion to articulate his long-held view that politics is fundamentally driven by interests rather than emotions. According to him, political relevance is sustained by the ability to mobilise support, secure votes, and deploy influence where it matters most. He cautioned supporters against being distracted by criticisms from political opponents, describing such voices as marginal and ineffective.

Drawing a global comparison, Wike argued that power determines the capacity to act on the international and domestic stages. He referenced former United States President Donald Trump to illustrate his point, noting that influence and authority are prerequisites for decisive political action. In his view, political actors without power are limited to commentary, while those with power shape outcomes.

Central to Wike’s argument was the role of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, which he described as a decisive political bloc in Rivers State. He asserted that the area’s voting strength has historically influenced the emergence of governors and senators, particularly in Rivers East Senatorial District. By contrasting local governments with minimal vote contributions to Obio/Akpor’s substantial electoral output, Wike reinforced the strategic importance of the area in state politics.

He further warned that political actors who antagonise Obio/Akpor should not expect electoral support in return. According to him, political contests are ultimately settled at the ballot box, and communities with numerical strength retain the power to determine outcomes. His remarks were met with strong approval from supporters, reflecting continued loyalty to his leadership within the council.

Authority to Sack Lies With the President

Addressing persistent calls by critics for his removal as FCT Minister, Wike was unequivocal in his response. He maintained that such demands are misplaced, stressing that his appointment and possible removal rest solely with President Tinubu. He argued that public commentary or political pressure cannot substitute for presidential judgment.

Wike stated that if the President determines that he no longer adds value to the administration, then he would accept such a decision as legitimate. Until then, he said, external calls for his dismissal remain irrelevant. He expressed confidence in his performance as FCT Minister, insisting that his work speaks for itself and has not disappointed Nigerians.

He also highlighted the importance of respecting institutional processes, noting that democratic governance requires adherence to constitutional authority. In his view, the President alone is empowered to assess the performance of ministers and take appropriate action where necessary.

By framing his defence around constitutional authority rather than personal loyalty, Wike sought to project an image of confidence and administrative competence. His remarks appeared designed to reassure supporters while challenging critics to recognise the limits of their influence.

Local and Legislative Backing Amid Rivers Political Crisis

The visit also provided a platform for key political figures in Rivers State to reaffirm their support for Wike and President Tinubu. The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Gift Worlu, praised Wike’s political journey and described him as a significant asset at the local, state, and national levels. He highlighted Wike’s record of service across multiple offices, including council chairman, chief of staff, governor, and minister.

Worlu emphasised the council’s loyalty to Wike’s leadership, particularly as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections. He made it clear that Obio/Akpor would not support any political direction perceived as ungrateful or disloyal, reinforcing the council’s commitment to Wike’s political stance.

Similarly, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, reiterated the legislature’s support for Wike and President Tinubu. He assured the minister of continued prayers and backing, dismissing critics as disconnected from the realities of governance and public service.

These declarations come amid a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, rooted in the fallout between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. The crisis has previously led to impeachment attempts in 2023 and 2025, both of which were halted through presidential intervention. At one point, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, underscoring the severity of the political standoff. Wike’s latest comments suggest that tensions remain unresolved, with Obio/Akpor once again positioned at the centre of the state’s power dynamics.
