ADC to Tinubu: Nigeria Is Not Lagos, Forget 2031

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly rejected assurances from the Presidency that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu harbours no intention of staying in power beyond 2031. The party insists that his constitutional mandate ends in 2027 and warned against any attempt to normalise tenure elongation in Nigeria’s democratic system.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC declared that Nigerians would not tolerate even a single day of extended rule, citing widespread insecurity, economic hardship, and abuse of power under the current administration.
“Given the spate of banditry, hunger, punitive taxes, and the flagrant abuse of power at a scale never seen before, President Tinubu should be preparing to leave in 2027. Any plan to stay beyond that date would confirm that this government is incapable of reading the room,” Abdullahi said.

The statement followed the Presidency’s dismissal of claims by former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who had alleged that Tinubu aimed to become a “life President.” The ADC maintained that the government’s response only deepened suspicions among Nigerians.

ADC Accused of Failure in Security and Economy

The ADC used the opportunity to paint a grim picture of the country’s security landscape, accusing the administration of allowing bandits and terrorists to operate with total impunity across large parts of the North.
“Under his watch, national security has degenerated into a cruel joke. Terrorists, bandits, and criminals now operate without fear. Citizens are kidnapped in broad daylight, and rural communities have become warzones,” Abdullahi stressed.

On the economy, the party said Tinubu’s government had presided over the collapse of the naira, a surge in inflation, and the destruction of small and medium-scale businesses.
“The naira has collapsed. Food prices have tripled. Jobs are vanishing. The middle class is disappearing. Businesses that once thrived are collapsing under the weight of punitive taxes and policy inconsistencies,” the statement read.

The ADC further criticised failures in power supply, healthcare, education, and human rights, insisting that Nigerians had been left poorer and more frustrated since Tinubu assumed office.

ADC Warns Against Lagos-Style Politics

The party accused Tinubu of attempting to replicate at the national level the political dominance he maintained in Lagos since leaving office as governor in 2007. According to the ADC, Nigeria’s diverse political landscape cannot be reduced to the model of Lagos politics.

“Let it be said clearly and without ambiguity: Nigeria is not Lagos. Nigerians are watching. And come 2027, it won’t be APC versus ADC, it will be APC versus the Nigerian people,” Abdullahi warned.

The statement concluded by declaring that re-election is not automatic, stressing that President Tinubu must earn the people’s mandate through performance rather than assumption.
