The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked public verbal assault” launched by Bolaji Abdullahi, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The comments, made during a recent national television appearance, have been characterized by the PDP as “reckless,” “unwarranted,” and symptomatic of a deeper agenda against Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
The PDP, in a press release issued through its official channels, expressed deep disappointment that Abdullahi—who previously served as a spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC)—would use his new platform in the ADC to attack the PDP rather than address pressing national issues. The party alleged that Abdullahi’s remarks reflect a lingering loyalty to the APC and a deliberate strategy to undermine the growing momentum of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, Abdullahi’s criticism appears rooted in discomfort with the PDP’s increasing national traction. “It is rather unfortunate that the APC-indoctrinated Abdullahi is apparently unhappy that the Peoples Democratic Party is building momentum against the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement read.
PDP Declares It Will Not Be Distracted by Fringe Attacks
In its response, the PDP made it clear that it would not engage in political squabbles with smaller parties, including the ADC. The party emphasized that its focus remains on challenging the ruling APC on issues of governance, corruption, and economic mismanagement, rather than engaging in what it termed “baseless attacks” from lesser-known political actors.
Asserting its stature as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the PDP reiterated that it commands nationwide respect and remains the most credible vehicle for political change in 2027. “The PDP, as the leading opposition party, commanding the respect, loyalty and solidarity of the overwhelming majority of Nigerians, will not descend to join issues with the ADC or any other opposition party,” the party stated.
The Peoples Democratic Party further insisted that its approach is driven by policy, vision, and responsibility, unlike what it described as the “diversionary tactics” employed by figures like Abdullahi who allegedly serve as “known agents of the APC.”
Momentum Builds Ahead of 2027 as PDP Rallies Support
Despite reports of defections from its ranks in recent months, the PDP maintained that its foundational strength lies in the unwavering support of ordinary Nigerians. The party insisted that the real “organic strength” of the PDP remains intact, grounded in public goodwill and its national spread.
“The Peoples Democratic Party therefore remains the party that has the support base, connections, national spread and political muscle to unseat the APC,” the statement read, pointing to its legacy of governance and development during previous administrations. According to party officials, Nigerians “still recall with nostalgia” the PDP’s governance years, in contrast with what it sees as the APC’s record of economic hardship and insecurity.
The Peoples Democratic Party also took the opportunity to reiterate that it has an ample pool of credible and experienced presidential hopefuls who are capable of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a free and fair election. Without naming names, the party hinted at the readiness of its presidential bench to lead Nigeria into a new era of reform and development.
PDP Extends Olive Branch to Like-Minded Nigerians
While dismissing the ADC’s criticisms, the PDP signaled openness to broader political coalitions, calling on “well-meaning and like-minded citizens and groups” to join forces in the bid to rescue Nigeria from APC rule. This, the party said, aligns with its vision of building a united front against what it termed a “failed ruling party.”
The Peoples Democratic Party described itself as a platform of choice for Nigerians seeking honest leadership, accountability, and inclusive governance. “As the platform of choice for all Nigerians, the PDP remains open to working with other well-meaning and like-minded citizens and groups,” the statement noted.
This coalition-building strategy is expected to shape the Peoples Democratic Party’s approach to the 2027 elections, where unity among opposition parties could prove decisive in wresting power from the incumbent government.
Preparations in Full Gear for Peoples Democratic Party’s National Convention
Amid the war of words, the Peoples Democratic Party emphasized its internal preparations and strategic repositioning ahead of the next general elections. Central to these efforts is the upcoming National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convention, according to party officials, will consolidate recent reconciliatory efforts and energize the party base nationwide. Following the successful hosting of its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the PDP says it is now focused on unifying its ranks, refining its policies, and mapping out a clear path to electoral victory in 2027.
In closing, the party affirmed that it would not allow “known agents of the APC” to derail its focus or distract it from its mission to return Nigeria to the path of progress. “Our Party is working assiduously towards a successful National Convention… and will not allow itself to be distracted by baseless attacks,” the statement concluded.
