Fresh Crisis Rocks PDP as Wike Pulls Out of All Agreements, Vows to “Fight Until Justice is Attained”

Fresh Crisis Rocks PDP as Wike Pulls Out of All Agreements, Vows to "Fight Until Justice is Attained"

The crisis plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Sunday as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, declared his withdrawal from all reconciliation agreements previously reached with party stakeholders. In a strongly worded statement titled “PDP Crisis: My Position”, Wike accused key PDP figures, particularly Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, of dishonesty and betrayal, asserting that he will now “fight on until justice is attained.”

Wike Blames Makinde for PDP’s Internal Crisis

In his statement, Wike did not mince words as he openly blamed Governor Seyi Makinde for the festering crisis within the PDP. He alleged that Makinde was the chief architect of the party’s problems, pointing to the governor’s repeated failure to adhere to binding agreements among stakeholders.

“Since after the 2023 general election, PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders,” Wike lamented. “At a meeting of the G5 in Lagos, I told Governor Makinde that he was the architect of our problems.”

Wike accused Makinde of reneging on resolutions previously agreed upon and acting unilaterally, thereby derailing efforts aimed at stabilizing the party. He recalled that even after tensions were resolved at the G5 meeting and further discussions were held in Abuja with prominent PDP leaders, Makinde continued to act in breach of the consensus.

Fallout from Abuja Meeting and the Saraki-led Reconciliation Team

Wike explained that an expanded meeting held in Abuja with notable PDP figures such as Governors Bala Mohammed and Umaru Fintiri, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, led to critical resolutions meant to restore order within the party. Chief among the agreements were the affirmation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, the withdrawal of all legal matters concerning Rivers State, and the cessation of any attempts to declare a state of emergency in the state.

A stakeholders’ meeting was subsequently held at the Bauchi Government Lodge, during which a reconciliation committee headed by Saraki was formed to address lingering issues. However, Wike expressed disappointment that the committee’s efforts were undermined even before it began work.

“To my utter dismay, even before the Saraki Committee commenced its work, the gentleman’s agreement we reached was being brazenly violated,” Wike said. “Makinde and Governor Peter Mba of Enugu connived to push for the adoption of Ude Okoye as Secretary, threatening to pull the South-East out of the party if their demand was not met.”

Violations of Agreements and the Jos Congress Debacle

Wike further accused Governor Makinde of orchestrating a series of procedural breaches, including attempts to impose the Deputy National Secretary as the acting National Secretary in contravention of party resolutions and legal provisions. He noted that this was used to justify the convening of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting without due process.

“In an even more embarrassing move, a valid letter confirming the governorship candidate of the party in Anambra, duly signed by Senator Anyanwu and the acting National Chairman, was rebutted by the National Publicity Secretary under the influence of Makinde and Mba,” Wike disclosed.

He cited the recent PDP zonal elective congress in Jos on May 24, 2025, which was abruptly aborted due to INEC’s refusal to attend. According to Wike, the electoral body declined the invitation because the letter was not signed by the legally recognized National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu.

“This is undeniably distasteful, provocative, and annoying,” he declared. “It reveals a pattern of deliberate sabotage and institutional disrespect within our party.”

Wike’s Decision to Fight On

Wike concluded his statement with a firm declaration to withdraw from all previously reached agreements. He emphasized that his decision stemmed from the consistent bad faith exhibited by his fellow party leaders and their continued disregard for laid-down processes and mutual consensus.

“I have been in this party since 1998 and worked tirelessly for its survival. None of these individuals have made contributions close to what I’ve given,” Wike stated. “It is painful that despite playing pivotal roles in their election victories, they have rewarded me with treachery.”

He reiterated his commitment to justice, adding, “Since it is now clear that some leaders will continue to play games to the detriment of the party, I have firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I will fight on until justice is attained.”

Implications for the PDP’s Future

Political observers have noted that Wike’s withdrawal from all reconciliation efforts may spell further instability for the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. With divisions already apparent among governors, national officers, and regional blocs, the party may struggle to present a united front.

Already, there are concerns that the escalating internal battles could alienate grassroots supporters, weaken organizational structures, and embolden opposition parties. The Saraki-led reconciliation committee, designed to heal rifts, now appears to have lost a key stakeholder in Wike, potentially crippling its mandate.

As the PDP confronts yet another leadership crisis, party faithful and Nigerians at large are watching to see how the situation unfolds—and whether the nation’s oldest opposition party can survive its internal convulsions.
