AKWA IBOM 2027: TINUBU, AKPABIO, ENO ENDORSED AS SOLE CANDIDATES — NO PARTY CONSIDERATION, SAYS SENATE PRESIDENT

AKWA IBOM 2027: TINUBU, AKPABIO, ENO ENDORSED AS SOLE CANDIDATES — NO PARTY CONSIDERATION, SAYS SENATE PRESIDENT

In a bold political declaration ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced that the people of Akwa Ibom State have unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Umo Eno, and himself as the sole candidates for the presidential, gubernatorial, and senatorial seats respectively. The endorsement, he said, cuts across political party lines and represents a new consensus in the state’s political direction.

Akpabio made the declaration on Friday during the second phase of his constituency empowerment programme held in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. According to a statement from his media office, Akpabio emphasized that the unity and peace within the state, driven by Governor Eno’s leadership, have created the foundation for the joint endorsement.

“The people of Akwa Ibom North-West and indeed the entire state have spoken clearly. For 2027, there is no contest here. President Tinubu, Governor Umo Eno, and I have been adopted as sole candidates. This is beyond party politics. This is about unity, peace, and progress,” Akpabio said to thunderous applause from the crowd.

A Gesture of Unity and Development

Akpabio commended Governor Umo Eno’s inclusive leadership style, describing him as a man of peace and integrity. He stated that the peaceful atmosphere across Akwa Ibom State, fostered through Eno’s collaboration with the federal government and the Senate, has attracted the admiration of President Tinubu and contributed to accelerated development in the state.

“Let me thank Governor Umo Eno because he is a man of peace. He is a man of God both in attitude and actions. He has been able to bring us all together in Akwa Ibom, and that is why we are enjoying peace in the state. President Tinubu is very happy with Akwa Ibom because of the harmony here,” Akpabio said.

He further emphasized that the proposed joint candidature was not an imposition but a people-driven decision endorsed by thousands in attendance. When he presented the motion to make the trio unopposed candidates, the crowd reportedly responded with a unanimous voice vote of approval.

Massive Empowerment Programme Worth Over N2 Billion

The political announcement was made during a major empowerment event that saw over three thousand beneficiaries receive various support items and financial assistance. Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West in the Senate, distributed items including mini buses, saloon cars, tricycles, refrigerators, sewing machines, cargo tricycles, and cash grants.

The total value of items and grants distributed during the event exceeded N2 billion. Scholarships were also awarded to deserving students, not only from his senatorial district but also from the other two senatorial zones of the state. According to Akpabio, the gesture was part of his commitment to improving the lives of his constituents and ensuring sustainable development across the state.

“This is not just about politics; this is about people. It is about economic empowerment and giving our youth, women, and the elderly a sense of belonging and support,” he said.

Public Reaction and Political Implications to Akpabio pronouncement

The public reaction to Akpabio’s announcement has been mixed, with supporters praising the unity and peace message while others questioned the democratic implications of declaring unopposed candidates years before the elections. Political analysts suggest that while the endorsement may be symbolic, it sets the tone for 2027 and underscores Akpabio’s influence within Akwa Ibom and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“This is a significant political statement. While it may not have legal binding under the electoral act, it reflects the strategic consolidation of power by Akpabio and his allies. The question now is how other political players in Akwa Ibom will respond,” a political observer noted.

Despite the early nature of the endorsement, supporters believe it will bring political stability and continuity in governance. “We want peace and development, not election fights every four years. If these three men are delivering, why change them?” one attendee remarked.

Looking Ahead to 2027

While the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to release official guidelines for the 2027 elections, the political climate in Akwa Ibom is already heating up. Akpabio’s declaration may set a precedent for other regions where political strongmen wield considerable influence over electoral outcomes.

The decision to bypass party primaries and consider candidates based on consensus could redefine party politics in the state. However, the sustainability of such a model will depend on public acceptance, party alignment, and INEC’s legal framework leading into the next election cycle.

As Akwa Ibom basks in the afterglow of a well-funded empowerment program and the rhetoric of unity, all eyes will be on how this early political alignment evolves — and whether it signals a new era or a contested battle ahead of 2027
