Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has raised profound concerns about the current state of security in the South-East region, asserting that criminals have systematically hijacked the original Biafran liberation movement. In a detailed press briefing, Soludo revealed that what began as a separatist agitation has mutated into a sophisticated network of organized criminal activities.
The governor’s Soludo stark assessment indicates that these criminal elements have transformed the legitimate struggle into a “lucrative criminality” enterprise. By exploiting the name of Nnamdi Kanu and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), these groups have engaged in widespread criminal activities including armed robbery, kidnapping, and cultism. Soludo emphasized that these actions bear no resemblance to a genuine liberation movement, but are instead driven purely by greed and lawlessness.
Demographic Breakdown of Criminal Activities by Soludo
Statistical evidence presented by Soludo paints a troubling picture of the region’s security landscape. Over 99% of criminals arrested in Anambra State during the past two years were of Igbo origin, with more than 70% being non-indigenous to the state. This data underscores the governor’s argument that the criminal networks have transcended traditional geographical and ethnic boundaries.
The governor Soludo was unequivocal in his criticism, stating that these groups have “tasted blood” and are now motivated exclusively by financial gain. He argues that even the potential release of Nnamdi Kanu would likely have minimal impact, as these criminal elements appear to have completely severed ties with the original political objectives of the separatist movement.
Community Complicity and Psychological Warfare
One of the most disturbing aspects of the current security crisis, according to Soludo, is the level of community complicity. Some local communities are actively supporting these criminal elements, viewing them as heroes and security agencies as adversaries. This psychological dynamic makes combating insecurity exponentially more challenging.
The governor Soludo revealed that in some instances, communities are providing food and shelter to criminals hiding in forests, effectively creating safe havens for their operations. This support system transforms what could be a straightforward law enforcement challenge into a complex social and psychological problem that requires multi-faceted solutions.
Comprehensive Security Strategy: Operation Udo Ga Chi
To address these multifaceted challenges, Soludo announced ‘Operation Udo Ga Chi’ (Operation Peace Shall Reign), an ambitious state-wide security initiative. The operation, set to commence after January 25, will deploy 163 branded vehicles for stop-and-search activities and integrate advanced surveillance technologies to track and neutralize criminal networks.
Key components of the strategy include training forest guards, collaborating with local vigilante groups, and establishing a comprehensive amnesty program. The governor is offering criminals an opportunity to surrender until the end of February, demonstrating a nuanced approach that combines firm law enforcement with potential rehabilitation.
Soludo’s final message was a call to collective action, urging religious leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to actively participate in securing their communities. “Insecurity is a monster that must be confronted collectively,” he emphasized, introducing the mantra: “If you see something, say something.”
A Call for Collective Action
Governor Soludo emphasized that achieving peace in the South-East requires collective efforts from all stakeholders. He called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to take ownership of their communities and cooperate with security agencies.
“Insecurity is a monster that must be confronted collectively,” Soludo declared. “If you see something, say something. Anambra will no longer be a haven for criminals masquerading as freedom fighters.” He also commended the Federal Government and security agencies for their support, reiterating his administration’s determination to restore peace and security in the state.
By urging collective responsibility, Soludo hopes to foster a united front against the growing insecurity in the South-East, ensuring that criminality under the guise of agitation is effectively eradicated.
