Shettima Criticizes Kemi Badenoch for Remarks on Nigeria

Vice President Kashim Shettima has openly criticized Kemi Badenoch, the newly elected leader of the UK Conservative Party, for what he described as disparaging remarks about Nigeria. Speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue at the State House in Abuja on Monday, Shettima emphasized the significance of Nigeria’s global contributions and the value of its diaspora.

Shettima remarked, “Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Conservative Party, is entitled to her opinions, but her efforts to denigrate her nation of origin are disappointing. Nigeria remains the greatest black nation on earth, and by 2050, it will become the third most populous nation globally.” His comments aimed to counter Badenoch’s statements about Nigeria’s governance and societal challenges.

Migration’s Role in Global Development

Highlighting the contributions of migrants, Shettima underscored their role in shaping societies. “Migrants are a vital source of life in all societies. One out of every three or four black men globally is Nigerian,” he stated. Shettima further expressed pride in the achievements of Nigerians abroad, even as he urged figures like Badenoch to avoid undermining their heritage.

The Vice President’s comments reflect Nigeria’s broader commitment to celebrating its diaspora’s achievements while addressing narratives that could harm the nation’s image. He encouraged unity and collaboration to tackle Nigeria’s challenges without resorting to rhetoric that diminishes its stature.

Kemi Badenoch’s Controversial Remarks

Badenoch, who recently ascended to leadership within the UK Conservative Party, has faced criticism for her comments about Nigeria. In 2022, she described growing up in Nigeria as an experience marked by corruption, unfulfilled promises, and widespread poverty. “I grew up in Nigeria and saw firsthand when politicians use private money as their piggybanks and promise the earth without delivering,” Badenoch had stated.

Her remarks, which also touched on socialism and poverty, painted a bleak picture of Nigeria. While Badenoch credited Britain for providing opportunities for hard work and success, her comments have been perceived by many, including Shettima, as undermining Nigeria’s global image.

Shettima’s Vision for a Resilient Nigeria

Shettima’s response to Badenoch’s statements aligns with his vision of a resilient Nigeria capable of addressing its challenges. He called for a balanced perspective that recognizes the nation’s struggles while celebrating its strengths. “We are proud of Nigerians achieving great things abroad, including Kemi Badenoch, but let us not forget the enduring potential of our homeland,” Shettima said.

The Vice President stressed the importance of dialogue and collaboration among Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to foster national development. His remarks serve as a reminder of Nigeria’s position as a global powerhouse and a call for unity in addressing the nation’s challenges.

Public Reactions: Mixed Views on Badenoch’s Comments

Shettima’s criticism has sparked diverse reactions across social media and public forums, with many Nigerians divided over Badenoch’s remarks and their implications. A Twitter user, Sakiru Oyegunle, urged Nigerians to focus on addressing the issues Badenoch raised rather than attacking her personally. “Kemi should be left alone! Our leaders should work towards making Nigeria attractive to world leaders. Rule of law, equity, and fairness should be our watchwords,” Oyegunle posted.

On the other hand, Oyetola, another commentator, defended Shettima’s stance and called for unity in condemning Badenoch’s comments. “All Nigerians with the right mindset should speak up against Kemi Badenoch for her derogatory statements about our country. She is deliberately doing this to please her new home, the UK Conservative Party. However, he who God sets to destroy will be destroyed,” he tweeted.

The Broader Implications of Shettima’s Criticism

Shettima’s remarks highlight a broader debate about the role of diaspora Nigerians in shaping perceptions of their homeland. While Badenoch’s statements may reflect her personal experiences, critics argue that they perpetuate stereotypes and undermine Nigeria’s progress on the global stage. Conversely, her defenders assert that her comments are rooted in truth and serve as a wake-up call for Nigerian leaders to address systemic issues.

As Nigeria approaches a pivotal moment in its history, with projections of becoming a global economic and demographic powerhouse, leaders like Shettima are urging citizens to rally around the nation’s potential. However, the tension between pride in one’s heritage and the pursuit of opportunities abroad continues to spark contentious debates within the Nigerian diaspora
