In a sweeping victory, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged triumphant across all 18 local government areas in Ondo State’s gubernatorial election. According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the state collation center, the APC’s Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa defeated his opponents with a decisive margin, solidifying his mandate across the state. This comprehensive win highlights the APC’s stronghold in Ondo and reaffirms its popularity among voters in the region.
The election results saw the All Progressive Congress leading in every local government, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailing in second place. This victory not only strengthens the APC’s position in Ondo State but also reflects a broader political trend as the party maintains its influence in the southwest.
Announcement of Results Amid Recess and Security Measures
The collation of results began on Saturday, with INEC officials releasing data from 13 of the 18 local government areas. Results from two additional LGAs were announced on Sunday morning, while the final three – Odigbo, Ilaje, and Ese Odo – were declared by the State Returning Officer, Professor Olayemi Durotimi Akinwunmi of the Federal University Lokoja, later in the afternoon. This staggered release came after a brief recess, which allowed for the arrival of results from LGAs located farther from the state capital, Akure.
Professor Akinwunmi resumed the announcement at approximately 12:30 PM, ensuring transparency and accuracy in the collation process. INEC’s commitment to a thorough process underscores the commission’s dedication to conducting credible elections, even as logistical challenges delayed the arrival of final results from remote areas.
PDP Agent Raises Allegations of Electoral Irregularities in Idanre
During the collation process, an agent representing the PDP raised significant concerns regarding alleged irregularities in Idanre Local Government Area. The agent accused APC supporters of vote-buying, ballot box snatching, and other electoral malpractices. Moreover, it was claimed that voting was disrupted in certain areas, leading to some eligible voters being unable to cast their ballots.
Citing these grievances, the PDP agent formally requested that the results from Idanre be nullified. Although INEC proceeded with the collation, the allegations underscore ongoing concerns about election integrity, highlighting the need for improved oversight to prevent irregularities in future elections.
Breakdown of Results: APC Dominates with Large Margins
Detailed results from each local government area reveal the APC’s overwhelming dominance across Ondo State. In Ifedore LGA, for instance, the APC secured 14,157 votes, compared to the PDP’s 5,897. This trend was consistent across other LGAs, with the APC recording substantial leads. In Akoko South-West, APC garnered 29,700 votes, dwarfing the PDP’s 5,517. In Owo, another stronghold, the APC amassed 31,914 votes against the PDP’s 4,740.
The results from the densely populated Akure South LGA were also notable, where APC received 32,969 votes, while the PDP followed with 17,926 votes. These figures underscore the APC’s deep-rooted influence in both urban and rural areas across the state, showcasing a broad voter base that spans diverse demographics.
