Wike Generation Next Decries Governance Crisis in Rivers State

Wike Generation Next has expressed deep concern over the recent political developments in Rivers State, particularly the manner in which official correspondence is being handled. The group noted that a letter allegedly signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and dated March 7, 2025, was only made public via social media on March 9, 2025. However, despite its circulation online, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has not received any official communication from the Governor’s office.

The group finds it alarming that the Speaker’s initial letter, which was meant to restore legislative-executive communication, was rejected upon dispatch to the Government House. There is no record of its receipt, no signed acknowledgment from the Assembly, and no proof of any formal engagement. Instead, the government claims it only became aware of the Speaker’s letter through social media—after blocking its official delivery. Wike Generation Next insists that withholding such critical communication and later releasing it for public theatrics undermines governance.

Wike Generation Next Condemns Governor’s Indirect Communication

Wike Generation Next has criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara for choosing to communicate with the Rivers State House of Assembly through the Secretary to the State Government rather than directly addressing the Speaker. The group describes this approach as unconventional and a deliberate attempt to sideline the legislature. In a properly functioning democracy, the Governor, as head of the executive, must accord due respect to the Speaker, who leads the legislative arm of government.

The group asserts that Governor Fubara’s actions reflect an unnecessary game of hide-and-seek at a time when Rivers people need decisive leadership. They argue that genuine governance cannot be conducted through evasive tactics. Wike Generation Next warns that Rivers citizens are watching and will recognize when the Governor is truly ready to engage in meaningful dialogue rather than fueling political drama.

Wike Generation Next Highlights Legislative Priorities

Wike Generation Next has reiterated that the Rivers State House of Assembly remains committed to its constitutional responsibilities despite the ongoing political turmoil. The group pointed out that a plenary session had already been scheduled for March 10, 2025, during which the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd.), was expected to appear before the House.

The group insists that governance should not be held hostage by political theatrics, emphasizing that the Assembly has pressing matters to address. Wike Generation Next maintains that the legislature will continue to fulfill its mandate regardless of the Governor’s reluctance to cooperate. The group warns that ongoing political distractions could disrupt governance and negatively impact key decision-making processes in the state.

Wike Generation Next Cites Court Ruling on Legislative Independence

Wike Generation Next has reminded the Rivers State Government that the legal standing of the House of Assembly is not in question. The group referenced the ruling of Justice J.K. Omotosho in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023, which was upheld by the Supreme Court, affirming that the Assembly has the authority to conduct legislative business at any location of its choice.

This judgment followed the widely condemned demolition of the Assembly Complex at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt—an act deemed unconstitutional and undemocratic. Wike Generation Next emphasized that the rule of law must be respected and that the legislative arm cannot be subjected to executive overreach. The group insists that any attempt to undermine the Assembly’s independence is a direct attack on democracy and will be resisted.

Wike Generation Next Demands Budgetary Compliance

Wike Generation Next has raised concerns over the financial impasse in Rivers State, stating that the Governor has no legal right to access or spend state funds without presenting a budget to the House of Assembly. The group insists that due process must be followed, and lawmakers must be involved in budgetary decisions.

The group further decried the Governor’s refusal to pay Assembly members for over 12 months despite multiple court rulings affirming their rights. Wike Generation Next argues that the deliberate withholding of lawmakers’ entitlements is an attempt to force submission, which they insist will not succeed. The group demands immediate compliance with constitutional financial procedures, warning that any attempt to bypass the legislature on budgetary matters would be illegal.

Wike Generation Next Calls for Resolution and Accountability

Wike Generation Next has urged all stakeholders to prioritize the stability and progress of Rivers State. The group calls on Governor Fubara to abandon divisive tactics and engage the legislature in good faith. They argue that without a functional government, essential services such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education will suffer.

The group warns that the ongoing crisis is setting a dangerous precedent for governance in Rivers State. They call on well-meaning citizens, civil society organizations, and the judiciary to ensure that democratic principles are upheld. Wike Next remains committed to defending the integrity of the legislative process and ensuring that Rivers State is governed by the rule of law.
