Veteran comedian and social commentator, Ali Baba, has sparked a new conversation online after publicly declaring his support for polygamy. The renowned entertainer explained that he views the practice as a traditional system that promotes balance and discipline in marriages, especially in African societies where it has long existed as a cultural norm.
During a recent interview, Ali Baba argued that polygamy is not inherently negative, as many modern critics believe. Instead, he said, it can help maintain structure within families when handled responsibly and respectfully. He added that men who choose to marry more than one wife should do so with maturity and fairness, as the arrangement demands emotional intelligence and leadership.
According to the comedian, “Some people believe that if you have only one wife, you may not be able to control her. But if she knows you have more than one, she’ll calm down because she knows that if she misbehaves, another woman can take her place.” His statement has since ignited mixed reactions across social media.
He Links Polygamy to Traditional Family Systems
Ali Baba also drew historical references to back up his argument, pointing out that in many African societies, polygamy was not only accepted but encouraged for practical reasons. He noted that in the past, it was common for women themselves to support or even initiate the process of bringing in another wife, especially when they wanted to keep their husbands from seeking affairs outside marriage.
He emphasized that such arrangements often ensured transparency and stability in homes, as opposed to the secrecy and infidelity that dominate many relationships today. “In traditional settings,” he explained, “women sometimes helped their husbands marry younger wives to avoid the shame of them keeping concubines elsewhere. It was seen as wisdom, not weakness.”
The comedian further argued that many of these cultural values have faded with modernization, yet they once contributed to family unity and social balance. He said understanding those historical contexts could help Nigerians appreciate the deeper reasoning behind polygamy.
It’s a Cultural System, Not a Crime” — Ali Baba Insists
While acknowledging that polygamy may not align with modern lifestyles, Ali Baba maintained that the system still has its merits, especially when practiced with mutual respect. He explained that many of the societal issues surrounding marriage and infidelity could be reduced if couples approached relationships with honesty about their expectations.
He also touched on traditional customs where, in the event of a man’s death, his widow would be married by his brother to ensure the wellbeing of her and her children. According to him, this system—though viewed differently today—was one of the ways society protected women from hardship and social exclusion.
Ali Baba concluded by saying he personally supports polygamy, not as a form of dominance, but as a practical, culturally rooted solution that can maintain family discipline when approached responsibly. “It’s part of our heritage,” he said, “and I believe in it because it worked for generations before us.”
