In a significant development, the University of Lagos has announced a fee reduction following a crucial meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students.
University of Lagos’ Fee Reversals, Hostel Fees, and Student Union Government
The management of the University of Lagos has responded to the demands put forth by student representatives during a meeting held on Thursday. The meeting, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, took place on September 14, 2023, with Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, and other key representatives in attendance.
During the meeting, Barambu articulated the students’ demands, which included the reversal of obligatory fees, the reduction of hostel fees, and the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government in UNILAG.
Student Protest Yields University’s Reversal
In response, Vice-Chancellor Ogunsola emphasized the university’s commitment to providing quality education to all students, regardless of their background.
After careful deliberation, the meeting reached a consensus on the following fee adjustments:
Utility Charges for all students reduced to N15,000:00 from N20,000:00.
Obligatory fees for new undergraduate students revised from N126,325:00 to N116,325:00 for Courses without Lab/Studio, and N176,325:00 to N166,325:00 for Courses with Lab/Studio.
This decision reflects the University of Lagos’s dedication to accommodating students’ needs and fostering an inclusive educational environment.
