Trump Throws a Curveball at 2023 Spending Bill: Seek to Defund Jack Smith and Prosecution Team

Trump took to his Truth Social platform

In a surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump shall we say “shoot himself in the foot” as he attempted to kneecap the already complex negotiations surrounding government funding.

Few hours after House Republicans reported progress on a proposal to avoid a government shutdown, he took to his Truth Social platform to demand that “McCarthy and Gaetz GOPs” should “defund” Special Counsel Jack Smith and his team.

Smith is currently prosecuting Trump in federal court in Florida and Washington, D.C., leading to trials related to government document retention and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been working diligently to find common ground within his conference to secure government funding beyond Sept. 30.

However, hardline Republicans like Rep. Matt Gaetz have entertained the idea of passing 12 individual single-subject spending bills, adding a touch of comedy to the debate.

McCarthy’s solution involves a 30-day stopgap bill to prevent a shutdown while the House deliberates on the 12 spending packages. Considering the need for approval from the Democratic-controlled Senate and President Joe Biden, Trump’s request to defund Smith’s office is met with humor and skepticism.

Nevertheless, His allies in Congress continue to play their comedy roles. In August, Gaetz introduced a measure to “censor” the judge in his D.C. trial, adding another layer of amusement to the ongoing political theater.
