Tragic Tanker Explosion in Jigawa Claims Over 90 Lives

Jigawa Explosion Survivor Recounts Tragic Ordeal; Death Toll Climbs to 168

A devastating tanker explosion in Majia Town, Jigawa State, has claimed the lives of 90 people. The incident occurred late on Tuesday, at approximately 11:30 p.m., when a fuel tanker lost control near Khadija University in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. According to police spokesperson DSP Lawal Adam, the tanker was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Despite warnings from authorities to stay away from accident sites, a crowd gathered around the overturned tanker, many attempting to scoop fuel. Tragically, the tanker exploded, resulting in a massive fire that killed 90 people on the spot and left 50 others severely injured. The injured victims were immediately rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals, Jigawa state where they are currently receiving treatment.

Warnings Ignored, Leading to Mass Casualties in Jigawa Tanker Explosion

DSP Adam expressed deep concern over the public’s disregard for safety warnings at accident scenes, particularly those involving fuel-laden tankers. “In spite of police warnings for people to steer clear from scenes of accidents involving fuel tankers, they still engage in such acts,” Adam stated. He explained that the mass casualties could have been avoided if the public had heeded the warnings.

The police have consistently urged the public to avoid gathering at scenes of fuel-related accidents due to the high risk of explosion, but these warnings were ignored in this instance. The scene quickly descended into chaos as the fire engulfed those who had gathered to scoop fuel, further complicating rescue efforts.

Injuries and Fatalities Increase Amid Rescue Efforts

Local authorities reported that around 50 people sustained severe injuries in the explosion, many of them suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Emergency services worked through the night to contain the blaze and attend to the injured, while the remains of the victims were removed from the scene. The fire burned well into the early hours of Wednesday, further complicating rescue operations and recovery efforts.

The tragedy in Jigawa echoes a similar disaster that occurred in Niger State just a month earlier, where at least 48 people lost their lives after a fuel tanker collided with another truck. Such accidents have become all too common in Nigeria, where fuel tankers and commercial trucks frequently travel on poorly maintained roads under dangerous conditions. Experts have long warned that a combination of reckless driving, bad roads, and faulty vehicles are contributing to the increasing number of tanker explosions and road accidents in the country.

Mass Burial and Community Mourning

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a mass burial was organized for the victims. The ceremony took place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, with grief-stricken residents and officials in attendance. The entire Majia Town in Jigawa State was in mourning, as the community struggled to come to terms with the loss of so many lives.

Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, AT Abdullahi, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and to the entire Jigawa community. “This is a heartbreaking moment for us all,” he said. “We share in the pain and sorrow of the families affected.” Abdullahi also emphasized the importance of public safety and urged citizens to prioritize life over material gains in such dangerous situations.

Calls for Increased Public Awareness

Authorities are now calling for increased public awareness about the dangers of fuel tanker accidents. Commissioner Abdullahi appealed to the public to notify security agencies or relevant stakeholders when accidents of this nature occur to prevent further loss of life. “Safety must be our priority,” he said, adding that the Jigawa Tanker Explosion incident serves as a tragic reminder of the risks involved in fuel-related accidents.

Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moments when the fire broke out. Sani Umar, a local resident who narrowly escaped the inferno, described the scene as one of chaos and despair. “It was terrifying. People were running in all directions, screaming for help. The fire spread so quickly that many couldn’t escape,” Umar said. His account highlights the urgent need for more stringent public safety measures and a stronger response from emergency services to prevent future tragedies
