Tinubu’s Chicago Legal Battle Escalates: Judge Approves Delay in Releasing 1979 Academic Records

Chicago State University Confirmed Tinubu'S Graduation:

In recent developments, United States District Judge Nancy Maldonado has agreed to delay the release of President Bola Tinubu‘s academic records from Chicago State University. The order to make these documents available to the legal team of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had caused a legal dispute.

The emergency hearing, which took place late Thursday night, followed a motion by the president’s lawyers seeking a postponement of the document release until Monday.

This legal battle stems from an earlier order issued by Magistrate Jeffrey Gilbert, directing Tinubu’s alma mater to provide relevant and non-privileged documents to Atiku within two days. These documents included records of Tinubu’s admission, attendance dates, degrees, awards, and honors obtained during his time at the university.

The President’s legal team argued that the order needed review by a district judge. Babatunde Ogala, the Coordinator of Tinubu’s Presidential Legal Team, emphasized that the magistrate could only make recommendations and did not have the authority to give a final order.

Ogala clarified, “We are not filing an appeal but asking for a review against Monday for the judge to pronounce.” His request for a review and delay of the order was granted by the US district judge shortly after speaking with the media.

Judge Maldonado expressed her commitment to upholding the legal process and ensuring a fair resolution, acknowledging the significance of Nigeria’s legal deadlines. Meanwhile, the President continues his diplomatic activities, including addressing the UN General Assembly and participating in ceremonies like ringing the NASDAQ closing bell in New York, maintaining a busy agenda amid the ongoing legal turmoil.
