President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. John Nwabueze as Nigeria’s first Tax Ombudsman, marking a major step toward promoting transparency, accountability, and fairness in the country’s tax administration.
The establishment of the Tax Ombudsman Office forms part of the President’s broader reform agenda aimed at restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s tax system and ensuring that both taxpayers and tax authorities operate under a framework of mutual trust and legal compliance. The office will function as a neutral arbiter in resolving disputes between taxpayers and relevant government agencies such as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and other fiscal institutions.
According to the Presidency, the initiative aligns with ongoing fiscal reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on improving governance, closing revenue leakages, and strengthening institutional oversight in tax management.
Tinubu Says Office Will Promote Fairness, Efficiency, and Accountability
President Tinubu emphasized that the Tax Ombudsman Office is designed not only to address grievances but also to prevent systemic abuse and arbitrary use of power by tax officials. By institutionalizing this mechanism, the administration seeks to uphold the rule of law and promote an environment where citizens’ economic rights are respected.
The Tax Ombudsman will oversee the intake, examination, and resolution of complaints involving taxes, levies, customs duties, excise matters, and other related issues. It will ensure that every action taken by tax authorities adheres to established laws and due process, thereby fostering fairness and consistency in the enforcement of Nigeria’s tax policies.
Through this initiative, the Tinubu administration aims to create a culture of accountability within tax institutions and to build taxpayers’ confidence in the system’s integrity, transparency, and responsiveness.
The Tax Ombudsman to Safeguard Taxpayers’ Rights and Prevent Abuse of Authority
The Tax Ombudsman, under Dr. Nwabueze’s leadership, is mandated to act as a watchdog for taxpayer protection, ensuring that conflicts between taxpayers and officials are handled efficiently, impartially, and cooperatively. The office will serve as a platform where citizens can lodge complaints and seek redress without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
By monitoring and reviewing tax-related practices, the Ombudsman will help prevent excessive use of authority, arbitrary assessments, or corruption among tax officers. This oversight mechanism is expected to contribute significantly to building a more just and predictable fiscal system, one where taxpayers’ rights and obligations are clearly defined and equally enforced.
The move represents another crucial step in Tinubu’s commitment to reform Nigeria’s public institutions and strengthen the social contract between the government and its citizens.
