Popular Nigerian singer and producer, Augustine Miles Kelechi, better known as Tekno, has revealed the painful ordeal that forced him off the stage in 2019 at the peak of his career. Speaking candidly about the issue, Tekno explained that his troubles began in Ghana during a performance where he pushed his voice beyond its natural limit. The overscreaming caused a severe strain on his vocal cords, leading to acid reflux that further inflamed and damaged them.
What initially seemed like a minor discomfort soon became a nightmare. The more Tekno tried to sing through the pain, the more serious the damage became, until he eventually lost his voice completely. This health crisis left him unable to perform, communicate, or even record new music. For a superstar whose life revolved around music, the experience was devastating.
The singer disclosed that his silence was not a matter of choice but a medical necessity. For nine agonizing months, Tekno could not speak. He had no option but to cancel all his scheduled shows worldwide and refund payments already received, a move that cost him millions of naira and left him uncertain about the future of his career.
Battling Misdiagnosis and Exploitation
While struggling with the loss of his voice, Tekno embarked on a desperate search for medical help. He revealed that he consulted several doctors, many of whom charged exorbitant fees but offered little or no real solution to his problem. According to him, each consultation cost as much as $1,600 (about ₦2 million), yet the doctors often gave him false assurances of improvement while his condition continued to deteriorate.
The singer described this period as one of the darkest times of his life, not only because of the physical pain and inability to perform but also because of the betrayal he felt from supposed professionals who took advantage of his desperation. Tekno expressed deep disappointment in the heartlessness of individuals who, instead of offering genuine help, saw his pain as an opportunity to cash out.
As the months passed, the frustration mounted. His fans were left in the dark about his absence, while the singer himself wrestled with fear that his career might be permanently over. He admitted that during this time, he faced bouts of hopelessness, wondering if he would ever be able to sing again.
Finding a Solution and Returning Stronger
Determined not to give up, Tekno sought treatment outside Nigeria and eventually traveled to the United States in search of a lasting solution. It was there, after several tests and proper diagnosis, that he underwent a complex 12-hour surgery aimed at repairing his vocal cords and reversing the damage caused by months of strain and acid reflux.
The surgery was not only expensive but also physically demanding, yet Tekno said it was worth every moment because it restored his ability to speak and sing again. He described the feeling of regaining his voice after nine months of silence as nothing short of a miracle, crediting his survival to persistence and divine intervention.
Looking back, the “Pana” crooner described the entire ordeal as a life-changing experience that taught him resilience, patience, and the importance of self-care. He admitted that he now approaches music differently, taking extra care of his voice and health to avoid a repeat of the painful episode. Tekno’s story has since become an inspiring tale of survival, reminding fans that even stars face battles behind the scenes.
