The South-West Governors’ Forum has announced a joint security operation to tackle the growing threat of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the region. This decision follows reports of terrorist infiltration into South-Western forests and recent arrests of suspected ISWAP members.
The governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo states met in Lagos to strategize on security measures, emphasizing aerial surveillance and intelligence sharing to counter the insurgents.
Regional Security Collaboration Strengthened
The meeting, held at the Lagos House in Ikeja, brought together Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo). After four hours of deliberation, the Forum issued a communique condemning the ISWAP threat and committing to enhanced security operations.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who chairs the Forum, outlined key measures, including the establishment of a Joint Surveillance Monitoring Team and the deployment of advanced technology such as aerial surveillance systems. He also emphasized closer collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and local security outfits like Amotekun.
“The Forum strongly condemns any threat to the region’s security. We will remain vigilant and take all necessary actions to counter these threats,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Growing ISWAP Presence in South West and the Call for Action
Concerns over ISWAP’s activities in the South-West have grown following intelligence reports and security operations. In January, the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested 10 suspected ISWAP members in Ilesa, Osun State, underscoring the terrorists’ presence in the region.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier warned about fleeing bandits relocating from the North-West due to military operations. His call for vigilance resonated with the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), which urged the governors to act swiftly against terrorist camps inside South-Western forests.
“These foreign Fulani terrorists have always said that after conquering the North, the South will be next. But the OPC is ready to ensure that Yoruba land is never conquered,” said OPC President Wasiu Afolabi.
Army and Amotekun Deepen Partnership
To further boost regional security, the Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its partnership with Amotekun, the South-West’s local security network. During a meeting in Akure, the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Brig. Gen. Justin Ifeanyi, praised Amotekun operatives for their role in intelligence gathering and crime prevention.
“We want to elevate our collaboration with Amotekun. Their actionable intelligence has been vital in tackling kidnapping and other crimes in Ondo State,” Ifeanyi said.
Amotekun Commander Akogun Adetunji Adeleye welcomed the partnership, describing it as a “success story” in combating criminal elements in the region.
Communities as the First Line of Defense
Security experts have emphasized that local communities play a crucial role in preventing terrorist attacks. The Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Ajayi, speaking at a security lecture in Abuja, cited examples of communities in Bauchi State that successfully repelled terrorist invasions.
He recalled how Azare residents fought off Boko Haram insurgents, preventing further attacks in the area. Similarly, Tafawa Balewa locals resisted armed invaders, seizing their weapons and securing their town.
“The practical approach to security is to get communities involved. Security agencies alone cannot protect everyone,” Ajayi noted.
Governors Praise Tinubu’s Economic and Security Efforts
Beyond security, the South-West Governors’ Forum commended President Bola Tinubu for economic stability, particularly in the steady supply of petroleum products and exchange rate stabilization.
They also praised the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme, which has disbursed over N104 billion to students across Nigeria, benefiting many in the South-West. The governors urged eligible students to take advantage of the initiative to access higher education and vocational training.
Additionally, the Forum applauded the establishment of the South-West Development Commission, agreeing to situate its headquarters at Cocoa House, Ibadan. This move is expected to boost economic development in the region.
Efforts to Address Food Inflation
In response to rising food prices, the governors announced measures to curb inflation and ensure food security. The Forum resolved to:
Establish a State Food Inflation Joint Monitoring Team
Create Aggregation Centers and Food Hubs for inter-state trade
Regulate middlemen’s activities to prevent price hikes
The governors also tasked the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission with working on industrialization and infrastructure development to sustain regional progress.
Conclusion
Thursday’s meeting marked a significant step in securing the South-West against ISWAP threats. With joint security operations, advanced surveillance, and community engagement, the region is taking proactive measures to prevent insurgents from gaining a foothold.
Additionally, the governors’ economic and food security initiatives demonstrate a holistic approach to governance, balancing security concerns with socio-economic growth.
The next Forum meeting is expected to review progress and fine-tune strategies to strengthen regional security and development.
