Shiite Group Attacks Police in Abuja: Two Officers Dead, Three Unconscious

In a shocking incident that underscores the ongoing tensions between the Nigerian government and the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, two police officers have been confirmed dead, and three others remain unconscious following a violent shiite attack in Abuja. The attack occurred at Wuse Junction, a busy intersection in the heart of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where members of the Shiite group reportedly assaulted police personnel on duty.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the attack was sudden and brutal, catching the officers by surprise. The Shiite members, armed with an array of weapons including machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) made from bottles filled with kerosene, overwhelmed the police checkpoint. The shiite assault resulted in the tragic loss of two police officers’ lives and left three others critically injured and unconscious. The situation, which quickly escalated, caused panic among commuters and residents in the area until it was brought under control by additional police reinforcements.

Police Confirm Deaths, Ongoing Investigations of shiite attacks

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the casualties and stated that several arrests have been made in connection with the shitte attack. Speaking on behalf of the FCT Police Command, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as an unprovoked and heinous act of violence against law enforcement officers who were simply carrying out their duties.

SP Adeh detailed the nature of the weapons used by the attackers, highlighting the dangerous and lethal intent behind the assault by shiite group. She assured the public that the police are fully committed to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. “While several arrests have been effected, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemns the unprovoked attack on police officers. He promises to bring those involved to book,” SP Adeh stated. The PPRO also confirmed that the situation is now under control and that normalcy has been restored to the affected area.

Commissioner of Police Vows Justice, Urged public to Remain Calm

In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has vowed to pursue all legal avenues to ensure that justice is served. CP Igweh condemned the shiite attack in the strongest terms, calling it a direct affront to the authority of the Nigerian state and a challenge to the rule of law. He reiterated the commitment of the FCT Police Command to maintaining peace and security in the region and warned that any further acts of violence by shitte group would be met with the full force of the law.

The Commissioner also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue. He urged residents of Abuja to go about their daily activities without fear, assuring them that the police are on high alert to prevent any recurrence of such incidents. “Further developments will be communicated in due course,” SP Adeh added, indicating that the police will keep the public informed as more information becomes available.

This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Nigerian government and the shitte group, raising concerns about the potential for further unrest in the nation’s capital. The FCT Police Command’s swift response and the arrests made so far demonstrate their resolve to maintain order and protect citizens from such violent groups.
