President Bola Tinubu had emphasized in a recent statement that the path of war is incompatible with his ongoing economic reform agenda and the stability of the West African sub-region. While reiterating his commitment to defending democratic values, Tinubu acknowledged the complexity of the situation.
President Bola Tinubu Assures Commitment to Economic Reforms Amidst Niger Crisis
During a meeting with U.S. Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Molly Phee, at the presidential villa in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu asserted that the internal crisis in Niger would not hinder his determined pursuit of successful economic reforms for the betterment of Nigerians. He asserted his independence from external influences and outlined his approach to addressing the regional standoff within the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“We are actively engaged in employing diplomatic measures to peacefully resolve the situation in Niger. I am intentionally cautious, even in the face of ECOWAS’ consideration of all options, as I believe in exhausting all diplomatic avenues before resorting to conflict,” Tinubu explained.
Principles and Collaboration in Meeting with U.S. Envoy
He further stated, “While war is not conducive to my economic reform efforts or regional stability, the protection of democratic principles remains paramount. Our shared consensus within ECOWAS is a steadfast commitment to prevent any insincere delays.”
President Bola Tinubu also recommended a collaborative approach for U.S. policies, urging a focus on partnerships with independent African democracies that face challenges from both internal and external anti-democratic forces.
He underscored the need for reforming American-backed development finance and multilateral institutions to align with the developmental needs of emerging African democracies, operating within environments where authoritarian influences persist. The President stressed that African aspirations should not be exploited for self-serving purposes by power-seeking figures using unconstitutional means.
“While the private sector is poised to drive progress within a conducive environment, the U.S. Government’s role must be marked by innovative thinking. This includes creating incentives to stimulate U.S. industrial investments in Nigeria,” Tinubu concluded.
