President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Tasks Prof. Amupitan on Accountability and Public Confidence in Elections

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the inauguration of the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Joash Amupitan, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic system. He emphasised that “for our democracy to flourish, the integrity of our electoral system must be beyond reproach,” thereby placing responsibility squarely on the commission.

President Tinubu proclaimed that while “no electoral process is flawless,” it remains essential to continue strengthening electoral institutions to enhance credibility. He noted the value of transparency and fairness throughout the entire electoral lifecycle.

In his charge to Prof. Amupitan, President Tinubu declared: “I therefore charge you … to protect the integrity of our elections and electoral system,” signalling a renewed focus on institutional backing and oversight of INEC’s operations.

Context and Stakes for the New INEC Chairman

The appointment of Joash Amupitan comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria’s electoral architecture, with growing demands for reforms, quicker result announcements and stronger checks against malpractice.

Amupitan assumed office after being sworn in at the State House, Abuja and later taking up duty at INEC headquarters, signalling the formal start of his tenure with high expectations for performance.

President Tinubu highlighted the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election on 8 November as a “litmus test” for the newly instituted leadership of INEC, underscoring the immediate challenge faced by Amupitan.

Key Imperatives for Electoral Reform and Trust Building

President Tinubu insisted that all phases of elections — from registration through campaigning to voting and counting — must be transparent, credible and non-violent in order to maintain public trust.

He further emphasised that INEC’s institutional capacity must be strengthened, made robust and resilient against artificial setbacks, hinting at preventive measures, oversight mechanisms and improved technology.

The mandate given to Prof. Amupitan therefore is not merely symbolic: it includes safeguarding the integrity of polls, modernising processes, and restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic machinery. The President’s words mark a clear challenge and expectation.
