Police Authorities Dismiss Officer, Suspend Two Others Over Extortion Allegations In Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Police authorities have taken decisive action against officers implicated in an alleged extortion case involving a Port Harcourt resident. Inspector Michael Odey, one of the officers involved, has already faced dismissal, while ASP Doubara Edonyabor and ASP Talent Mungo have been suspended pending further investigation.

According to Grace Iringe-Koko, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, the decision to dismiss Inspector Michael Odey and suspend ASP Doubara Edonyabor and ASP Talent Mungo came after thorough proceedings and reviews conducted by relevant authorities. Iringe-Koko emphasized that these actions were taken following approval from the Police Service Commission (PSC), signifying a commitment to transparency and accountability within the force.

Inspector Michael Odey’s dismissal was announced earlier, effective from February 7, 2024, after comprehensive investigations. However, ASP Doubara Edonyabor and ASP Talent Mungo’s cases required further scrutiny and approval from higher authorities. The suspension of the two officers, effective from February 29, 2024, marks a significant step in addressing misconduct within the police force.

Suspension Pending Further Disciplinary Proceedings

The suspension of ASP Doubara Edonyabor and ASP Talent Mungo highlights the seriousness with which the police authorities are treating allegations of misconduct. Their salaries have been stopped, and they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) for further investigation. This committee, tasked with addressing disciplinary issues involving senior officers, will play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and upholding the integrity of the police force.

The public can expect updates on the cases involving these officers as the disciplinary process unfolds. The actions taken by the Rivers State Police authorities demonstrate a commitment to maintaining public trust and holding officers accountable for their actions. This decisive response to alleged misconduct sends a clear message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated within the ranks of law enforcement, reaffirming the police authorities’ dedication to upholding justice and the rule of law.

Allegations of Extortion by Police Officers

A human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, recently took to social media to raise allegations of extortion against police officers in Delta State. According to Gwamnishu, the officers allegedly arrested a man and extorted $3,000 from him before releasing him in Port Harcourt. The incident, as reported by Gwamnishu via his handle @HarrisonBbi18, involved officers from the Rivers State command who allegedly traversed multiple states with the victim before finally abandoning him. Gwamnishu’s post explicitly accused the commissioner of police in Rivers State of being aware of the situation.

The post quickly garnered attention, prompting a response from the Rivers State Police Command. In their statement, the police authorities confirmed that the officers in question had been identified and that they had been apprehended pending further investigation. The police spokesperson assured the public that the investigation into the allegations of extortion would be conducted transparently, with the outcome made public once concluded. This incident has raised concerns about police misconduct and extortion, highlighting the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies.

Calls for Entrenchment of Accountability and Transparency Among Police officers by Police Authorities

Following the allegations of extortion by police officers, there have been calls for increased accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. Civil society organizations and concerned citizens have expressed outrage over the reported incident, demanding swift action to address police misconduct and abuse of power. The case has reignited discussions about the need for comprehensive police reform to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

As the investigation into the allegations progresses, there is growing anticipation for the findings to be made public. Many are closely monitoring the developments, hoping for a thorough and impartial inquiry into the matter. Additionally, there are calls for the police authorities to prioritize the protection of human rights and ensure that justice is served for the victim of the alleged extortion. The outcome of this investigation is crucial not only for restoring public trust in law enforcement but also for holding accountable those responsible for any wrongdoing.
