In a recent statement, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, lashed out at the Nigerian Presidency for what he described as a deliberate attempt to undermine his image by drawing a flawed comparison between him and the former U.S. President Donald Trump. Obi, through his media office, expressed his disappointment over what he termed a “futile effort” by the presidency to cast him in a negative light using the ongoing American presidential election as a political tool.
Speaking through his spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar, in a statement titled “Why desperate OBI traducers are kissing the dust?” Peter Obi emphasized that the presidency’s move was both laughable and illogical. He argued that drawing parallels between him and Trump, in the context of the Nigerian political landscape, was a desperate attempt to distract the public from the real issues facing the country.
Attempts to Tarnish Peter Obi’s Image
Peter Obi’s media team highlighted what they see as a persistent campaign of misinformation against the former Anambra State Governor, accusing “desperate propagandists” of distorting facts to damage his public image. The statement noted that it has become a daily occurrence for the media to circulate false narratives aimed at tarnishing Peter Obi’s reputation. These fabrications, according to the LP candidate, range from imaginary arrests of his family members to baseless allegations of sponsoring violence.
The most recent—and arguably the most ludicrous—of these attempts, according to Obi’s camp, is the presidency’s decision to draw a comparison between him and Donald Trump. Peter Obi’s media team pointed out the absurdity of such a comparison, especially in the context of Nigeria’s socio-political challenges. “Every discerning mind who wants to compare Obi and Tinubu and attempts to equate them with the two American presidential candidates, Trump and Harris, knows too well the differences in terms of morality, transparency, good-standing antecedents, and people-focused policies,” the statement read.
Comparing Peter Obi to Trump: A Failed Propaganda
The attempt to link Obi with Trump appears to be a strategy designed to curry favor with the U.S. Democrats, a move Obi’s team views as weak and misguided. The LP presidential candidate stated that trying to malign his character through comparisons with a figure like Trump does nothing to address the actual challenges facing Nigerians under the current administration. Obi further criticized the presidency for diverting attention from pressing issues such as the economy, security, and governance by indulging in what he called “empty propaganda.”
The statement also ridiculed the spin doctors of the Nigerian presidency for engaging in such “clever-by-half” comparisons, suggesting that the real aim was to divert attention from the failures of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Obi emphasized that Nigerians are not gullible and would not be fooled by such tactics. “The Presidency, by indulging in such clever-by-half comparisons, merely brings to the fore the glaring weaknesses of the incumbent administration,” the statement noted.
Obi’s Role as a Symbol of Hope and Accountability
Obi’s media office positioned him as a symbol of hope for Nigerians seeking a better future, contrasting his open and transparent leadership style with the alleged aloofness of President Tinubu. “Obi remains a man who has not only become the conscience of the people but also their hope for a new and egalitarian democracy,” the statement emphasized. Obi’s team stressed that while the presidency continues to evade public accountability, Obi has emerged as the most visible and articulate political figure in the country.
Rather than acknowledging the harmful impact of their policies, Obi’s media office accused the current administration of trying to “de-market” Obi by associating him with Trump, thereby distracting the public from real issues. Obi has consistently called for the Nigerian government to focus on governance and address the “pains and pangs” it has inflicted on the Nigerian populace over the past year.
Peter Obi’s Focus on Nigeria’s Future
Despite the attacks on his character, Obi reiterated his focus on working for a better Nigeria, a vision that he says cannot be derailed by false narratives. Addressing insinuations that Obi is willing to serve as vice president to any candidate, his media team dismissed the claims as a fabrication. They reiterated Obi’s stance that while he is not desperate to be president, his ultimate goal is to see Nigeria work effectively for its citizens.
Obi called on his supporters, both in Nigeria and abroad, to remain steadfast in their efforts to bring about the change the country needs. He urged them not to be distracted by the misleading propaganda aimed at tarnishing his image. “POMR wishes to plead with Nigerians, especially the Obidients within and outside the country and across all political parties to remain undistracted in their aspiration and desire to see a new Nigeria that is possible,” the statement concluded.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with significant socio-economic challenges, Obi’s message resonates with many citizens frustrated by the current state of affairs. His commitment to transparency and people-centered governance remains a focal point of his political agenda, despite ongoing efforts to discredit him.
