Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria can earn more revenue from agriculture than from crude oil, if the right leadership and policies are in place. Speaking on the nation’s economic future, Obi emphasized that the path to sustainable growth lies in agricultural development, rural empowerment, and value-chain investment rather than continued dependence on oil exports.
Peter Obi reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria’s vast arable land and favorable climate provide a stronger and more inclusive foundation for national prosperity than the oil sector, which benefits only a few. He noted that several countries that once depended on oil have diversified successfully by investing heavily in agriculture, transforming it into a key driver of industrialization, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings. Obi stressed that with proper infrastructure, access to credit, and modern technology, agriculture could become the country’s most reliable source of national wealth.
Peter Obi Reaffirming His Belief on Nigeria’s Agricultural Transformation
Peter Obi reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria must adopt a strategic and data-driven approach to agricultural development. According to him, the government should invest in irrigation systems, storage facilities, research centers, and mechanized farming to improve productivity across all regions. He also called for the establishment of agro-industrial zones where local produce could be processed for both domestic consumption and export, thereby reducing post-harvest losses and increasing the value of Nigerian commodities.
He further highlighted the need for public-private partnerships to attract investment into the sector, stressing that the nation’s youth population could find meaningful employment through agribusiness. Obi maintained that if agriculture receives the same level of commitment and budgetary priority as the oil industry, Nigeria could not only achieve food security but also become a global exporter of agricultural products, from cocoa and palm oil to rice and cassava derivatives.
Agriculture as a Path to Inclusive Growth and Economic Stability
Peter Obi reaffirmed his belief that the agricultural sector remains the most inclusive and equitable path toward Nigeria’s economic stability. Unlike oil, which is concentrated in a few states, agriculture engages nearly every region and demographic group, providing opportunities for millions of Nigerians. He urged policymakers to reorient national priorities toward building a resilient, export-oriented agricultural economy capable of sustaining the nation in the post-oil era.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s over-reliance on crude oil revenue is unsustainable, especially given global shifts toward renewable energy and decarbonization. He concluded that with visionary leadership and disciplined governance, agriculture could surpass oil as Nigeria’s largest income earner, stimulate rural development, and restore the nation’s economic independence.
