PDP Will Be Beaten, Carried on Stretcher If Internal Crises Remain – Policy Analyst Okey Ikechukwu Warns

The Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, Okey Ikechukwu, has delivered a scathing assessment of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that unless the party addresses its lingering internal discord, it stands no chance in the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, the renowned policy analyst described the PDP as a shadow of its former self, failing to act as a credible opposition and at risk of complete political irrelevance.

PDP: From Political Powerhouse to Disoriented Opposition

According to Dr. Ikechukwu, the PDP has undergone a startling decline from its once-commanding political stature. He reminisced about the party’s glory days during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other key figures like Audu Ogbeh and Atiku Abubakar, when it ran multiple, vibrant campaign teams and maintained a robust national presence.

“In 2003, the PDP had three different presidential campaign teams operating simultaneously. That was a demonstration of depth, strength, and political organization,” he said. “Today, what you have is a whimpering collection of confounded men and women who are pretending to have a political party.”

Ikechukwu lamented that the PDP now seems more focused on internal squabbles than strategic planning. “What else does the Peoples Democratic Party do today other than talk about its quarrels? Occasionally, it issues press releases attacking the APC, thinking that is political opposition,” he remarked pointedly.

Opposition Role Now Handled by Activists, Not Peoples Democratic Party

The policy expert further expressed disappointment that the PDP has ceded its constitutional role as the main opposition party to non-political actors. He noted that civil society groups, elder statesmen, and independent commentators now take the lead in holding the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) accountable.

“The real opposition to Tinubu’s administration is coming from activists and concerned citizens. That’s a vacuum the PDP has left wide open,” Ikechukwu stated. “The whole point of opposition is to present an attractive alternative. Please, tell me what makes the Peoples Democratic Party attractive today?”

He added that unless the party resolves its internal issues and rebrands itself, it will only be participating in the 2027 elections for ceremonial purposes. “If nothing changes, PDP will not contest the 2027 election—it will merely participate. It sounds contradictory, but the result is predictable: they’ll be beaten and carried off on a stretcher,” he warned.

Wike: Political Asset or Embarrassment?

Dr. Ikechukwu also addressed the controversial presence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, within the Peoples Democratic Party. Despite Wike’s high-profile clashes with party leadership and alleged anti-party behavior, he remains a card-carrying member of the PDP. Ikechukwu described this situation as deeply embarrassing for the party.

“Whether you like Wike or not, you must admit he is no fool. You cannot disregard him. But the PDP should be ashamed that someone who has worked against the party so publicly still remains within its fold,” Ikechukwu asserted.

He maintained that Wike remains a valuable political force who would benefit any political group he aligns with. “Wike is a political asset. But letting him operate at full throttle in two political lanes, at 160 kilometers per hour, is proof that no one is directing traffic within the PDP,” Ikechukwu observed.

2027 Election Forecast: Bleak Outlook for PDP

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Ikechukwu was clear in his prognosis: the PDP is not ready. He questioned the party’s strategy and capacity to galvanize support, warning that failure to resolve its internal crises and improve public perception would lead to electoral disaster.

“The Peoples Democratic Party needs a dramatic reconfiguration. They must overhaul the way they present themselves, both in terms of internal discipline and public messaging. Otherwise, 2027 will be a catastrophe,” he cautioned.

He urged the party to reassess its leadership choices and ensure that its most visible figures do not represent outdated or divisive interests. “They must modify the optics. Who are the people Nigerians are seeing as PDP leaders? What do they represent?” he queried.

PDP Must Wake Up or Fade Out

In closing, Ikechukwu did not mince words in advising the Peoples Democratic Party. He stressed that the party needs a serious introspection and a bold strategic shift if it is to survive as a meaningful political force. “With all due respect to the distinguished people in that party, the PDP is making itself look more ridiculous by the hour. They need to stop kidding themselves,” he said.

The analyst’s remarks reflect growing concerns among political observers and stakeholders who fear that Nigeria’s democracy is at risk if the opposition fails to strengthen its role. As 2027 approaches, the Peoples Democratic Party faces an uphill battle—not only against the APC but against the weight of its own disarray.
