The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the judiciary to demonstrate a renewed sense of patriotism and professionalism as the party prepares for its 2025 National Convention.
In a statement issued by its Media Sub-Committee on Saturday, the PDP stressed that these institutions hold the key to ensuring a peaceful, credible, and transparent convention, scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The party expressed optimism in the leadership of the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, while noting that vigilance remains essential. According to the statement, the PDP would continue to observe the commission’s activities before, during, and after the convention to ensure compliance with democratic principles and fairness in the process.
Concerns Over APC’s Alleged Interference and Judicial Manipulation
The PDP also raised concerns about possible attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to interfere with the conduct of the convention through judicial and political means. It claimed that there were growing fears among supporters that the APC might exploit legal channels to delay or disrupt the event.
“These fears are not unfounded,” the statement read. “Given the APC’s history, the possibility of using intra-party saboteurs or external influence to derail the PDP’s November convention cannot be dismissed.”
The Media Sub-Committee alleged that such acts form part of a broader strategy to manipulate the 2027 general elections and entrench a one-party system that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic diversity. It warned that such tendencies were reminiscent of authoritarian politics and urged all stakeholders to resist them.
PDP Appeals for Unity and Vigilance Among Members
Beyond external threats, the PDP called on its members to remain steadfast and united in safeguarding the party’s democratic legacy. The statement emphasized that internal cohesion was critical to countering both overt and covert attempts to destabilize the party ahead of the convention.
“To PDP faithful, this is the time to unite more than ever before,” the committee declared. “Nothing should be allowed to derail the forthcoming national convention. We have laboured and nurtured Nigerian democracy to its present stage, and that effort must not be in vain.”
The party further cautioned against any misuse of the Nigeria Police Force to disrupt the lawful gathering of its members, urging security operatives to act as impartial guardians of democracy rather than instruments of political intimidation.
As Nigeria’s oldest major opposition party, the PDP’s call serves as both a plea and a warning — a reminder of the fragile balance between democratic competition and institutional integrity. With its national convention approaching, the coming weeks will test the readiness of Nigeria’s democratic institutions to remain neutral arbiters in a tense political climate.
