The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the 2027 general elections will serve as a referendum on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government’s “litany of failures.” Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the party is rallying to offer a credible and accountable alternative to the Nigerian people.
Ologunagba accused the APC of deepening national misery through what he described as misguided policies, ineffective governance, and propaganda-driven leadership. According to him, the growing hardship and insecurity in the country are clear indicators that the current government has failed to deliver on its promises. “In two years, over 600 Nigerians have been killed. That’s on record,” he said, stressing the administration’s failure to prioritize the security and welfare of citizens.
Economic Mismanagement and Loan Burden Under Fire
The PDP spokesman sharply criticised the APC’s economic direction, particularly questioning the rationale behind President Bola Tinubu’s $24.5 billion loan request, which he said was meant to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal but has yet to produce visible results. “The president asked for a $24.5 billion loan to cushion the effect of subsidy removal—two years after. Where is the money? We were told subsidy removal would free up funds. Where are the results?” Ologunagba queried.
He further lamented the harsh living conditions Nigerians are enduring, noting that over 100 million people are living on less than $2 a day. “This government celebrates defection like it’s celebrating successful policy—that’s an indictment,” he added, highlighting the administration’s alleged focus on political consolidation instead of addressing poverty and inflation.
PDP Warns Against One-Party State and Rubber-Stamp Legislature
Ologunagba expressed serious concern over what he described as the APC’s covert agenda to establish a one-party state, which he said poses a grave danger to Nigeria’s democracy. “We’ve heard the president openly express a preference for a one-party state. That’s dangerous. Let me say it again: the idea of a one-party state must perish. It will not happen in this country,” he warned.
He also accused the National Assembly of abandoning its constitutional role of providing checks and balances. According to him, instead of interrogating executive actions, the legislature has become a rubber-stamp institution. “The Senate President has become a choirmaster, singing praises while the people suffer,” he declared, urging lawmakers to rediscover their mandate to serve the people rather than the executive.
PDP Rebuilding from Within, Preparing for 2027
Despite the challenges facing opposition politics in Nigeria, Ologunagba assured that the PDP is actively rebuilding its structures and reinforcing its internal cohesion. He revealed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30 is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen its foundation and galvanize national support.
“We are on course. Slowly but surely, we are rebuilding this party for 2027,” he said, expressing optimism that the PDP will emerge stronger and more united ahead of the next general elections. He highlighted the party’s ability to activate its organs—Governors’ Forum, Board of Trustees (BOT), National Working Committee (NWC), and National Assembly Caucus—in a coordinated and constitutionally compliant manner.
Call for Accountability and Democratic Revival
Concluding his address, Ologunagba called on Nigerians to resist political manipulation and demand accountability from the APC-led administration. He urged citizens to uphold democratic principles and reject authoritarian tendencies. “Let’s hold this government to account. Let’s tell our people that democracy is the only way. We are not in a one-party state. We are not in a monarchy,” he said.
The PDP spokesman reaffirmed the party’s commitment to multi-party democracy and promised that the opposition would continue to provide the necessary checks to ensure good governance. “We want to be Nigerians, and we want to be able to pursue happiness and opportunity,” he added, positioning the PDP as the vehicle for national renewal and democratic restorations
