PDP State Chairmen Back Damagum, Reject Abdulrahman Faction Ahead of National Convention

The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its full support and loyalty to the party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, declaring him as the only constitutionally recognized leader of the party.

In a communique issued at the end of their meeting held on Thursday, November 6, the forum, which comprises 29 state chairmen, stated that any group or faction claiming to lead the PDP under Abdulrahman Mohammed is “illegitimate and inconsistent with the party’s constitution.”

The state chairmen reaffirmed their full support and loyalty to the party by underscoring the need for internal cohesion ahead of the forthcoming national convention. They urged members across the country to disregard any divisive narratives capable of undermining the unity and progress of the PDP.

Forum Declares Abdulrahman Faction Illegitimate

The PDP state chairmen, in their collective resolution, dissociated themselves from the purported leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed, describing it as “a desperate attempt to distract the party’s ongoing reconciliation and reorganization efforts.”

The state chairmen have reaffirmed their full support and loyalty to the party, reiterating that the PDP Constitution (2017, as amended) recognizes only one National Chairman at a time, and that position is duly occupied by Ambassador Umar Damagum.

“The forum in the same vein dissociates itself from the purported Abdurahman leadership and wants to categorically say that the PDP has only one National Chairman, His Excellency Umar Damagun,” the statement read. The chairmen emphasized that the party’s internal mechanism remains strong enough to address grievances within its ranks without resorting to parallel structures.

Chairmen Commend PDP Leadership Synergy

In a show of unity, the forum commended what it described as the “collaborative leadership” between the National Working Committee (NWC), the PDP Governors’ Forum led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and the Board of Trustees (BoT) chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara.

The state chairmen have reaffirmed their full support and loyalty to the party, applauding the coordinated efforts of these bodies in ensuring the party remains strong, cohesive, and focused on its objectives. They urged all party members to remain steadfast and supportive of the collective leadership as the PDP prepares for its national convention.

The forum expressed confidence that under Damagum’s leadership, the party would continue to consolidate its internal structures, strengthen its electoral strategy, and reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition force.
