The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday officially confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party. The decision came during its 102nd NEC meeting held in Abuja, a gathering that drew party leaders from across the federation.
The confirmation marks the end of Damagum’s tenure as acting chairman, a position he had occupied since March 2023 following the suspension of Senator Iyorchia Ayu. The party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, administered the oath of office in a brief swearing-in ceremony that temporarily halted the meeting’s proceedings.
In a communiqué issued afterwards, the NEC stated that the decision was in recognition of the National Working Committee’s (NWC) efforts under Damagum’s leadership in stabilising the party during a period of turbulence.
Damagum’s Journey to the Top
Damagum’s rise to the party’s top position has been anything but ordinary. Before his elevation, he served as PDP’s Deputy National Chairman (North). His assumption of office in 2023 followed Ayu’s suspension amid internal crises that threatened to fracture the opposition party.
Since stepping in as acting chairman, Damagum has earned a reputation as a stabilising figure, navigating bitter disputes, legal battles, and factional wrangling. His ability to maintain cohesion within the party has now been rewarded with full NEC endorsement.
The communiqué noted: “NEC hereby ratifies and confirms the appointment of Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party with effect from today, Monday, August 25, 2025, until the national convention holding at Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 15 and 16, 2025.”
Acceptance Speech and Pledges
In his acceptance speech, Damagum expressed gratitude to the NEC and members of the NWC for the trust reposed in him. He described the confirmation as both “an honour and a heavy responsibility,” promising to continue steering the party with fairness, inclusivity, and discipline.
He commended his colleagues in the NWC for their collective contributions, noting that his work would have been impossible without their support. Damagum also assured members and supporters that his focus remained on “repositioning the PDP to reclaim its rightful place as Nigeria’s leading political platform.”
The new chairman urged unity among party faithful, stressing that only a united front could guarantee the PDP’s return to power at the national level.
Looking Ahead to Ibadan Convention
The confirmation of Damagum sets the stage for the PDP’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State. Party insiders say the convention will serve as a defining moment, not only to consolidate Damagum’s leadership but also to strategize ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Observers believe that under Damagum’s leadership, the party will seek to reconcile aggrieved factions, strengthen its internal democracy, and present a formidable front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His role in managing pre-convention activities will be closely watched as a test of his political dexterity.
The Ibadan gathering is also expected to address zoning arrangements and other issues critical to the PDP’s national outlook.
Implications for the PDP’s Future
By confirming Damagum, the PDP has signalled its desire for stability and continuity rather than disruptive leadership changes. Political analysts say the move could help calm nerves within the party’s rank and file, particularly as it prepares for crucial electoral battles in coming years.
The decision also reflects NEC’s confidence in Damagum’s ability to manage internal contradictions without alienating key stakeholders. For many, his confirmation represents a bid to end recurring leadership crises that have weakened the PDP’s national image in recent years.
As the party braces for its Ibadan convention and eyes the 2027 elections, Damagum’s stewardship may well prove decisive in shaping the PDP’s fortunes.
