PDP Assures Party Congress Will Begin Soon as Preparations for 2027 Elections Intensify

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has assured its members and stakeholders that the party’s internal congress process will commence soon, as preparations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections. The assurance was given by the Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), Abdulrahman Mohammed, during a meeting with the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Mohammed noted that the party had already completed several preliminary steps, including ward and local government congresses, and was now moving towards the next phase of organising state congresses. The PDP leadership, he said, remains committed to strengthening internal structures and ensuring the party is adequately positioned for future electoral contests.

Progress on Congresses and Convention Planning of PDP

According to Mohammed, the PDP has successfully conducted ward and local government congresses across various parts of the country as part of its internal democratic process. These exercises form the foundation for the upcoming state congresses, which will eventually lead to the party’s national convention.

The NCWC chairman also disclosed that preparations for the national convention are progressing steadily. As part of these preparations, party officials recently inspected the Moshood Abiola National Stadium as a possible venue for the event. The inspection was aimed at assessing the facility’s suitability for hosting a large-scale political gathering.

He emphasised that the party leadership intends to follow due process and maintain transparency throughout the congress and convention processes. Party officials, he added, are working to ensure that organisational activities proceed smoothly despite ongoing legal matters related to the party’s leadership dispute.

Mohammed explained that the PDP leadership is awaiting the Certified True Copy of judgments delivered by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria concerning ongoing legal disputes involving the party. The documents, he said, would guide the next steps should the matter require further legal consideration at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He noted that recent rulings from the appellate court had favoured the PDP in several cases. According to him, the party secured victory in nine appeals, a development he described as reinforcing the legitimacy of the current caretaker leadership.

Mohammed stated that the party remains the only legitimate body authorised to present candidates under the PDP platform in future elections. He urged members to remain confident in the party’s leadership as it continues to navigate legal and organisational processes.

Call for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections

In his remarks, Mohammed called on party stakeholders to prioritise unity and collective progress. He stressed that internal disputes and prolonged litigation could hinder the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections as well as other off-season elections across the country.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between party organs, particularly the Board of Trustees, which he described as the “conscience of the party.” According to him, maintaining cooperation between the BoT, party leaders, and grassroots members will be critical to achieving the party’s political objectives.

The NCWC chairman concluded by urging members to focus on rebuilding the party’s strength and unity, saying that a united PDP would be better positioned to compete effectively in the upcoming electoral cycle.
