PASCAL DOZIE, FOUNDER OF DEFUNCT DIAMOND BANK, DIES AT 85

Pascal Dozie, renowned Nigerian economist, banker, and business magnate, has died at the age of 85. The founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc and former chairman of MTN Nigeria passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The news of his death was confirmed by his son, Uzoma Dozie, in an official statement issued on behalf of the family. “With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father… He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith,” the statement read. The family expressed profound appreciation for the outpouring of love and support and thanked God for the gift of his life and legacy.

Pascal Dozie Humble Beginning Rooted in Faith and Education

Pascal Dozie was Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Pascal Dozie was raised in a devout Catholic home. His father, Charles Dozie, was a catechist, and this religious upbringing profoundly shaped his values and commitment to service. His formative years were spent at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary, and Holy Ghost College, Owerri.

Dozie’s academic brilliance led him abroad in pursuit of higher education. He attended the prestigious London School of Economics, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University, London, after studying Operational Research and Industrial Engineering—equipping him with the skills that would later revolutionize Nigeria’s financial landscape.

Pioneering Diamond Bank and Transforming Banking in Nigeria

In 1990, Pascal Dozie established Diamond Bank, a financial institution that grew to become one of Nigeria’s most reputable banks. With a keen eye for innovation, ethical banking practices, and customer-focused service, Diamond Bank under his leadership became a benchmark for excellence in the Nigerian banking sector.

He later handed over leadership of the bank to his son, Uzoma Dozie, continuing the legacy of family-driven entrepreneurship. Though the bank eventually merged with Access Bank in 2019, its culture of innovation and integrity was a reflection of Pascal Dozie’s foundational values.

Beyond banking, Dozie made historic contributions to Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. As the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, he played a vital role in launching and expanding mobile telecommunications across the country.
