Palpable tension has gripped the Oba community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State following the discovery of over 30 graves and a shrine at a popular hotel in the area. The Anambra state’s recently established security outfit made the shocking find at Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, widely known as La Cruise Hotel, located along the Onitsha-Owerri Road.
Acting on a tip-off from a whistleblower, security operatives stormed the hotel and uncovered a horrifying scene. The structure, which allegedly served as a hideout for kidnappers and other criminal elements, was promptly demolished on Saturday. Authorities also discovered military camouflage, firearms, and live cartridges, further intensifying fears about the scale of criminal activities conducted within the premises. However, it remains unclear if any corpses were retrieved from the graves or if any arrests were made during the raid.
Anambra state Government and Security Agencies React
In response to inquiries, the Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, refused to comment, directing journalists to the governor’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime. Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government, through its official New Media X (formerly Twitter) account, confirmed the demolition of the hotel, describing it as a known hub for kidnappers.
Aburime stated that the demolition was in line with the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, which mandates the destruction of any property linked to kidnapping or criminal activities. He reiterated that the operation was based on credible intelligence and insisted that more details would be revealed as investigations continue. Despite widespread speculation, neither the government nor law enforcement has officially confirmed whether human remains were found at the scene.
Mixed Reactions from Residents
Following the demolition, residents of the Oba community expressed mixed feelings over the incident. Some lauded the government’s efforts in cracking down on criminal hideouts, while others raised concerns about the destruction of the hotel before a thorough investigation was concluded.
A resident who witnessed the demolition described it as “beyond comprehension,” expressing shock at the existence of such a sinister establishment in their community. However, another resident challenged the security forces’ findings, claiming that what was labeled as graves were actually fish ponds. These conflicting accounts have left many in the community eager for more transparency from the authorities.
Brothel Raid Uncovers More Criminal Activities
In a related development, the Agunechemba Security Squad conducted another successful raid on a suspected kidnappers’ hideout at a brothel in Akwu-Ukwu Oba, also in Idemili South LGA of Anambra State. Acting on intelligence, the operatives apprehended two suspected kidnappers and five prostitutes linked to the operation.
The security team confirmed that they had been monitoring the location after reports from concerned residents about suspicious activities. The suspects were arrested, and the building was immediately demolished, in line with Anambra State’s anti-kidnapping laws. Security officials have vowed to track down other members of the gang who managed to escape.
The discoveries at La Cruise Hotel and the Akwu-Ukwu brothel have heightened concerns about the presence of criminal networks operating in Anambra State. Residents are calling for increased security operations to prevent similar occurrences and ensure that the masterminds behind these heinous activities are brought to justice.
