Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has firmly ruled out defecting from the Labour Party alongside the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, despite Obi’s reported decision to leave the party. The governor made this known on Tuesday during his monthly media briefing in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, where he addressed questions on party politics, loyalty, and calls for him to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Otti clarified that while he is aware of Obi’s intention to exit the Labour Party and has given him his personal support, his own political future remains firmly rooted in the party that sponsored his successful governorship bid. He stressed that his immediate focus is on governance and internal party rebuilding rather than political realignment.
The governor’s comments come amid growing speculation over possible defections by key Labour Party figures, following internal challenges and realignments in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
Otti Confirms Obi’s Exit Plan, Affirms Loyalty to Labour Party
Governor Otti disclosed that Mr Peter Obi personally informed him of his decision to leave the Labour Party. According to him, there was no disagreement between both men over the issue, as he respects Obi’s right to make political choices based on his convictions and strategy.
He explained that his own relationship with the Labour Party predates Obi’s entry, noting that he did not join the party because of the former Anambra State governor. For Otti, remaining in the Labour Party is both a matter of principle and gratitude.
“The Labour Party is the platform that brought me to power,” the governor said, adding that abandoning it at a difficult time would be inconsistent with his values. He stated that his goal is to contribute to efforts aimed at rebuilding, repositioning, and strengthening the party for the future.
Focus on Rebuilding Rather Than Defection
Otti emphasized that any discussion about changing political platforms would only arise after the Labour Party has been thoroughly reformed and repositioned. Until then, he said, his commitment remains unchanged.
He explained that internal struggles within a party should not automatically result in defection, especially for leaders who have benefitted from the party’s platform. According to him, the more responsible approach is to engage constructively and work towards resolving challenges from within.
Governor Otti made it clear that, for now, defection is not an option, stressing that governance and party rebuilding take precedence over political calculations or pressure from external actors.
Response to APC Calls and Commitment to Governance
Reacting to public calls by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, urging him to join the APC, Governor Otti said he deliberately chose not to be distracted. He noted that responding to political provocations would divert attention from his administration’s responsibilities to the people of Abia State.
While acknowledging and commending Kalu for distributing support to vulnerable citizens in line with his Christmas message, Otti maintained a calm and measured tone. He said he has resolved to avoid confrontational or dismissive responses to political commentary.
Quoting former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Otti remarked that progress requires focus and discipline, adding that his administration remains committed to delivering good governance rather than engaging in political exchanges.
