Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the adoption of a consensus candidate in the party’s preparations for the 2026 Osun State governorship election. His declaration follows his disqualification—alongside six other aspirants—by the APC Screening Committee for alleged violations of party guidelines and electoral provisions.
Omisore Aligns with Tinubu’s Guidance
Senator Omisore, speaking on TVC News’ Politics Tonight on Wednesday, affirmed that his support for the consensus arrangement stemmed directly from President Tinubu’s leadership position within the APC.
He described the President’s stance as final, noting that party members are obliged to align with the direction of the party leader. “The president has spoken, and as party members we have to work with the terms of the president,” Omisore stated.
Despite being disqualified from the race, Omisore said he harbours no regrets about his past political decisions. Referring to himself as “an old wine that tastes better,” he maintained that he still commands a strong political base. Omisore also revealed that while he had proposed alternative strategies to party leaders, he ultimately chose to yield to the President’s decision for party unity.
Aspirants Move Toward Consensus
The development comes after a meeting convened by President Tinubu on Monday night, where other aspirants endorsed his preferred consensus candidate. Omisore was notably absent from the gathering, but he has now publicly aligned himself with the emerging agreement.
The meeting hosted by the President drew several governorship hopefuls, including former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), Babatunde Hareter Oralusi, Mulikat Abiola Jimoh, and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji. They collectively agreed to support a unified approach to avoid internal conflict ahead of the party’s December 13 primary.
APC Leaders Rally Behind Unified Strategy
Senior APC stakeholders also attended the meeting, including National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma, and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola.
In a joint statement issued after the consultations, the aspirants and party leaders pledged to uphold the consensus arrangement and refrain from any actions that could weaken the party’s cohesion. They further committed to collaborating toward securing victory for the APC in the 2026 Osun governorship election and ensuring stability and effective governance in the state.
Senator Omisore disclosed that he would formally brief his supporters on his position, stressing the importance of unified strategy as the party begins its march toward the election year.
