In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the Yoruba community, former President Olusegun Obasanjo faced strong criticism for ordering Yoruba traditional rulers in Oyo State to stand up and greet him.
The Oluwo of Iwo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I, condemned Obasanjo’s actions, calling it a desecration of Yoruba traditional institutions and demanding an apology.
Obasanjo Desecrate Yoruba Tradition
Obasanjo, speaking during the inauguration of a road project and university campus, insisted that wherever a governor or President is sitting, traditional rulers must show them respect. He cited the importance of culture and the Omoluabi ethos in Yoruba land, emphasizing the significance of age and position.
Oluwo of Iwo Also Criticizes Traditional Rulers’ Compliance with Obasanjo’s Order
However, the Oluwo of Iwo, in a statement, expressed deep disappointment in the traditional rulers who obeyed Obasanjo’s order. He stressed that respect should be earned, not demanded, and that traditional rulers also deserve respect. Monarchs, he stated, represent God’s authority on earth and deserve to be treated with modesty, courtesy, and respect.
The Oluwo of Iwo further asserted that such an incident would never happen in his presence and that of certain other monarchs who share his sentiments. He called Obasanjo’s actions condemnable and urged him to apologize to Yoruba traditional institutions.
In conclusion, the controversy surrounding Obasanjo’s disrespectful command highlights the need to preserve and uphold the dignity of Yoruba culture and traditional institutions, and the call for an apology underscores the seriousness with which this issue is being taken by Yoruba leaders and traditional rulers
