Ogun State to Promote Public Transportation with Construction of CNG-Powered Bus Stations

In a move towards enhancing public transportation, the Ogun State government has revealed plans to initiate the construction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mass Transit bus stations along the bustling Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Commissioner for Transportation, Engr Dairo Olugbenga, made this announcement during a recent radio program in Abeokuta. The identified locations for these bus stations include Mowe, Ibafo, Arepo, and Berger, strategically positioned to address the high traffic along this vital corridor.

Ogun State Implementation Frameworks and Urgent Commencement

Commissioner Olugbenga assured that the construction process would kick off promptly, emphasizing that all necessary implementation frameworks are in place. Urging citizens to support the government’s initiative, he emphasized the developmental importance of the project, stating that it aims to alleviate transportation challenges and contribute to a cleaner environment by reducing emissions.

Engr Dairo emphasized the significance of public cooperation, stating, “I want to use this medium to plead to our people for their support, as this is another integral part of development geared towards easing the movement of people and goods in Ogun State.” As part of the preparatory phase, CNG-powered mass transit buses will be deployed before the completion of the stations, offering cost-effective and safe transport options.

Four Key Elements of Ogun State Urban Transportation Strategy

Addressing the broader context of urban transportation in the state, Commissioner Olugbenga outlined the four key elements adopted by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun. These include infrastructure development, ongoing efforts to improve road conditions across all local government areas, and stringent law enforcement to ensure compliance with road safety regulations. The third element, operation formalization, aims to establish structured transport operations requiring operators to manage fleets of 10 to 30 buses, promoting efficiency and accountability.

This cooperative approach is anticipated to enhance monitoring, ensuring the smooth movement of goods and people across the state.

Price Control for Affordable Transportation

Highlighting the commitment to affordability, the Commissioner emphasized ongoing efforts to implement price controls on transportation services. The state government aims to provide cost-effective options for residents, aligning with broader initiatives to enhance the overall well-being of Ogun State’s populace.

Environmental Impact and Cleaner Transportation

The adoption of CNG-powered mass transit buses aligns with the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Engr Dairo reiterated that the new system would contribute to reducing environmental pollution by minimizing emissions, creating a cleaner and safer transportation environment for both passengers and the wider community. As Ogun State advances towards modernizing its transportation infrastructure, these initiatives mark crucial steps towards sustainable and accessible urban mobility.
