The Ogun State Police Command has taken decisive action by dismissing three officers—Cpl Idowu Sunday, Inspectors Taiwo Kolawole, and John Ogbe—attached to Ijebu Ife in Ijebu East local government. The dismissal follows an ordeal room trial after the officers were found guilty of extorting Three Hundred and Twelve Thousand Naira from a student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Kashimao Emmanuel. According to State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, the incident took place about three weeks ago when Kashimao was driving his brown Toyota Venza and was flagged down by four armed men, one of whom wore police camouflage.
Alamutu, the commissioner of ogun State Police Command disclosed that the officers demanded Kashimao’s phone, and upon his calm refusal, one of them fired a shot in the air. Subsequently, Kashimao complied, and the officers took him away, eventually transferring the money from his account to an Opay account. The Commissioner of Police of ogun state emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that such actions tarnish the image of the police force.
Unraveling a Pattern of Crimes and Swift Police Response
Upon receiving Kashimao’s complaint, the police swiftly took action, instructing a PoS operator not to release the transferred money until their arrival. The operator was also advised to use delay tactics in case anyone attempted to claim the funds. This strategic move by the police led to the arrest of Cpl Idowu Sunday at a POS shop in Ibadan garage, where he was waiting to withdraw the extorted money. Furthermore, Alamutu the commissioner of police of ogun state highlighted that during the investigation, two additional complainants emerged, sharing similar accounts of being victims of the dismissed officers who robbed them in a comparable manner.
The ogun State Police Commissioner affirmed that the three dismissed officers—Cpl Idowu Sunday, Inspectors Taiwo Kolawole, and John Ogbe—will be charged to court soon. This swift response not only addresses the specific incident but also sheds light on a potentially broader pattern of criminal behavior within the police force. The Ogun State Police Command’s commitment to accountability and justice is evident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust in law enforcement agencies.
Ogun State Police Command bold moves
In a significant move towards cleansing its ranks, the Nigeria Police Force has taken a giant stride in the fight against corruption within its ranks. The recent dismissal of three officers, namely Sunday Idowu, Taiwo Kolawole, and John Ogbe, from the Ogun State Police Command stands as a testament to this commendable effort. The decision reflects the police force’s commitment to redeeming its image and dispelling the prevalent perception of corruption that has plagued its reputation.
This bold action comes at a crucial time when public trust in the police force has waned, with many perceiving it as one of the most corrupt institutions. The dismissal of these officers sends a strong message that the force is actively working to address internal issues and eliminate unscrupulous elements. The move not only serves to restore confidence in the police but also aims to improve the synergy between law enforcement and the public, which is vital for effective policing.
Similar Strides in Oyo State: Two Officers Dismissed for Extortion Attempt
In a parallel development, the Oyo State Command has also taken decisive action against corruption within its ranks. Two officers, Jimoh Lukman and Kareem Fatai, faced dismissal for their alleged attempt to extort a Dutch tourist. This incident underscores the nationwide effort to eradicate corrupt practices within the police force and reinforces the commitment to holding officers accountable for their actions.
The impact of such dismissals extends beyond mere disciplinary measures. It is a proactive step to break down the barriers that hinder effective collaboration between law enforcement and the community. The wrong perception of the police force not only tarnishes its image but also impedes its ability to carry out its duties effectively. Moving forward, sustaining this momentum is crucial for instilling discipline, promoting professionalism, and rebuilding the trust that is essential for a harmonious relationship between the police force and the people.
