The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has declared Ogun State as Nigeria’s new epicenter for a thriving sports economy, crediting Governor Dapo Abiodun for spearheading the transformation. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 CAA African U18/U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, Olopade said the governor’s commitment to sports infrastructure has made the state a magnet for international sporting events.
“Look at how Governor Dapo Abiodun has turned around the landscape of sports development in Ogun State. By investing strategically in sports infrastructure across the board, Ogun State is now proudly hosting the entire continent,” Olopade said. “This is not just about national recognition—Ogun State is now on the map as an international sports hub.”
Olopade noted that the youths of Ogun State will forever remain grateful to the governor, as his administration’s focus on sustainable sports development has opened up new pathways for economic empowerment, talent discovery, and international exposure.
Reviving Abeokuta Through Global Sports Competitions
The refurbished MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta was the center of continental attention on Wednesday as the first day of the African Athletics Championships kicked off. The state-of-the-art facility, which recently hosted the Gateway Games 2024, is now the heartbeat of sports excellence in West Africa.
“This Championship is coming barely two months after Ogun State hosted one of the best-organized National Sports Festivals in recent history,” Olopade added. “The governor is not just ticking boxes; he is building an unmatched sporting legacy for future generations.”
He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to shift Nigeria’s sports policy from “consumption” to “production,” emphasizing that Governor Abiodun was among the first to fully embrace the mandate. “This is exactly what President Tinubu envisioned—hosting international competitions here in Nigeria that will benefit our young athletes and the economy at large,” Olopade stated.
Electrifying Start to African U18/U20 Championship
After months of intense preparation, the 2024 African U18/U20 Championship officially roared to life with thrilling displays of athleticism inside the stadium’s main bowl. Day One of the competition was marked by fireworks from the continent’s rising track and field stars, setting the stage for a fiercely contested event.
Nigeria and defending champions South Africa dazzled the crowds with standout performances, especially in the men’s and women’s 100m heats and the triple jump final. Nigeria’s Praise Ikweki clinched the nation’s first medal of the tournament, earning a bronze in the high jump with a gutsy performance that had fans on their feet.
Ikweki began his campaign at 1.80m, maintaining a flawless record until his first two failed attempts at 2.03m. He cleared the height on his third jump, but failed to scale the 2.06m mark after hitting the bar three times—allowing South Africa’s Mateo Le Roux to snatch the gold.
Nigerian Youths Shine Despite Stiff Competition
In the U18 Boys 100m Heat One, South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela finished first with a time of 11.38s. Nigeria’s Igbigbidje James Clifford also advanced to the semi-finals, finishing closely behind at 11.44s, demonstrating Nigeria’s growing strength in sprint events.
Meanwhile, in the U18 Girls 100m Heat One, Nigeria’s Mariam Jegede dominated the race with a time of 12.13s, finishing ahead of Congo’s Boukama Gladys (12.47s) and Ghana’s Darkoah Kwateng (12.64s). Jegede’s explosive start and graceful acceleration thrilled fans and set the tone for what is expected to be a medal-rich tournament for Team Nigeria.
The championship, which runs for several days, features athletes from over 30 African countries, many of whom are considered future Olympians and global contenders in athletics.
A Lasting Sports Legacy in the Making
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikkk joined Olopade in applauding the Ogun State Governor, saying the current momentum in the state is unprecedented. “This is what happens when leadership meets vision. The investments here will yield not just medals, but jobs, tourism, pride, and international partnerships,” he said.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, through deliberate policy and massive investment, is redefining sports not only as recreation but as a key pillar of Ogun State’s economic growth. From hosting top-tier events to nurturing talent through grassroots programs, his administration has placed Ogun State in a league of its own on the African sports map.
As the African U18/U20 Athletics Championship continues, all eyes are not just on the athletes—but also on Ogun State, now proudly seen as the continent’s new beacon of sports excellence.
