An Op-ed by Sir La’blu | OGMNewsNG.com- The recent Nigerian presidential election has given birth to a new political movement known as the “Obedient Movement,” supporters of Peter Obi. This group has gained significant traction, particularly among younger voters, but their chosen moniker raises eyebrows. The term “Obedient” implies a level of unquestioning loyalty that seems at odds with the principles of a robust democracy.
This nomenclature is reminiscent of cult-like behavior, where followers pledge unwavering allegiance to a single figure. In a healthy political landscape, citizens should be encouraged to think critically and hold their leaders accountable, rather than blindly obeying them. The very concept of obedience in politics can be dangerous, as it may lead to the suppression of dissenting voices and the erosion of democratic values.
Obedient movement: Parallels with MAGA: A Worrying Trend
The Obedient movement bears striking similarities to the MAGA (Make America Great Again) phenomenon in the United States. Both groups exhibit a fervent devotion to a single political figure, often blending religious rhetoric with nationalistic sentiments. This combination can be particularly potent, as it taps into deep-seated emotions and beliefs.
Like MAGA supporters, Obedient movement have been accused of promoting conspiracy theories and rejecting factual evidence that contradicts their narrative. This refusal to accept reality, particularly in the face of electoral defeat, poses a significant threat to democratic institutions. By denying the legitimacy of election results, these movements undermine public trust in the democratic process and create a fertile ground for social unrest.
The Dangers of Self-Hate and Misplaced Patriotism of the Obedient Movement
One of the most concerning aspects of the Obedient movement is the apparent self-loathing and disdain for their own country that some members display. This attitude manifests in a tendency to celebrate perceived national failures or embarrassments, particularly if they can be attributed to political opponents.
While personal opinions about President Tinubu may vary, it is crucial to maintain respect for the office of the presidency itself. Celebrating perceived misfortunes or embarrassments of the president, particularly on the international stage, is both unbecoming and potentially harmful to our nation’s interests.
Take, for instance, the recent incident involving Aisha Yesufu and the rest of the so call “Obedient Movement.” Their jubilant reaction to what they erroneously believed was a slight against President Tinubu during his visit to South Africa is deeply troubling. Not only did they misconstrue the facts – President Ramaphosa did, in fact, shake hands with President Tinubu – but they also seemed to revel in the idea of our head of state being disrespected abroad. Such behavior reflects poorly on us as a nation and undermines our diplomatic standing. It’s high time we distinguish between legitimate political criticism and petty schadenfreude that serves no constructive purpose.
The recent announcement of Nigerian participation in space exploration is another case in point. This is an opportunity for national pride and scientific advancement, not a political football. It’s disheartening to see influential figures like Daniel Regha who to be fair, is neither a pronounced “obidient” nor fan of Tinubu on X/Twitter, asserted that “the Nigerian government has no business with space exploration” and his claim of misplaced priorities reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation. A shadow member of the Obedient Movement, Rufai Oseni on Arise News, also hastily condemning this development without proper research.
However, their criticism of the Tinubu administration in this context is entirely misplaced. The space exploration initiative in question is, in fact, 100% privately sponsored, with no involvement from the Federal Government. This rush to judgment without adequate information undermines the credibility of the opposition and does a disservice to public discourse.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thorough fact-checking before making public statements. As members of the opposition, it’s crucial to maintain credibility by basing criticisms on accurate information. Knee-jerk reactions and unfounded accusations only serve to weaken valid concerns about government policies and actions.
Space exploration has historically driven technological innovation, contributing to numerous life-saving inventions and advancements like the internet. By opposing such initiatives, we risk stunting our nation’s growth and global competitiveness. It’s worth noting that this particular space program is privately funded, making political affiliations irrelevant.
Obedient Movement Must Embrace Progress, Regardless of Politics
In the future, I urge my fellow critics and opposition members to exercise due diligence in their research. Our role is to provide informed, constructive criticism, not to spread misinformation or engage in baseless attacks. Let’s elevate the level of political discourse in Nigeria by prioritizing facts over rhetoric. I implore fellow Nigerians to reconsider their knee-jerk opposition to positive developments simply because they occur under an administration they dislike.
Before rushing to criticize, let’s commit to thorough research and fact-checking. Our nation’s progress should transcend political divisions. We must learn to celebrate achievements that benefit Nigeria, regardless of which administration oversees them. Our collective future depends on our ability to recognize and support positive developments, even when they challenge our political biases.
Such behavior is not only counterproductive but also deeply harmful to the nation’s progress. True patriotism involves a desire to see one’s country succeed, regardless of which political party is in power. By reveling in potential setbacks or manufacturing controversies, “Obidients” risk prioritizing their political agenda over the welfare of the nation as a whole.
The Importance of Respect for Democratic Institutions
While it is natural and indeed healthy for citizens to critique their government, there must be a baseline of respect for democratic institutions. The office of the presidency, regardless of its current occupant, deserves a certain level of reverence as a symbol of national unity and leadership.
Celebrating perceived disrespect towards the president on the international stage, as some “Obidients” have been accused of doing, does not serve the national interest. Such actions can damage Nigeria’s reputation abroad and weaken its diplomatic standing. It is crucial to separate personal feelings about individual politicians from the respect due to the offices they hold.
Moving Forward: Constructive Engagement and National Progress
For Nigeria to thrive, all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, must learn to engage constructively with national developments. This includes celebrating achievements that benefit the country, even if they occur under an administration one did not support.
The recent announcement of Nigerian participation in space exploration is a prime example. Such initiatives can drive technological advancement, inspire future generations, and enhance Nigeria’s global standing. It is shortsighted and counterproductive to oppose or denigrate such opportunities simply because they do not align with one’s political preferences.
In conclusion, while political passion is admirable, it must be tempered with reason and a genuine desire for national progress. The Obedient movement , like any political group, has the potential to contribute positively to Nigeria’s democratic discourse. However, to do so, it must move beyond blind loyalty and election denial, embracing a more nuanced and constructive approach to political engagement. Only then can Nigeria hope to harness the energy of its politically active youth for the betterment of the nation as a whole.
