The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has firmly rejected the purported suspension of its Kano State Chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, describing the action as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and legally ineffective. The NNPP’s national leadership insisted that Dungurawa remains the legitimate chairman in Kano State, calling on members to disregard what it termed unlawful pronouncements by a ward-level faction.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the NWC stressed that the alleged suspension contravenes the provisions of the party’s constitution and amounts to a serious act of anti-party conduct. The leadership reaffirmed its confidence in Dungurawa’s authority and urged party faithful to adhere strictly to established constitutional processes.
NNPP NWC Condemns Ward-Level Action as Anti-Party Activity
The NNPP National Working Committee faulted the move by some executive members of Gargari Ward in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, Kano State, who announced the suspension of the state chairman. According to the NWC, such an action falls outside the jurisdiction of ward executives and directly violates the party’s constitutional framework.
Ladipo Johnson stated unequivocally that the purported suspension is “misplaced, undemocratic, null, void and of no effect whatsoever.” He emphasized that no ward executive has the authority to suspend a state chairman, particularly one who also serves as a member of the party’s National Executive Committee.
The NWC further cautioned that actions capable of undermining internal cohesion would not be tolerated, describing the incident as a gross anti-party activity that threatens discipline and unity within the NNPP.
Party Leadership Reaffirms Confidence in Dungurawa
In its statement, the national leadership praised Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa as a committed and effective party leader. The NWC described him as “a conscientious, hardworking, and dutiful chairman” whose leadership has significantly contributed to the growth and stability of the NNPP in Kano State.
The committee noted that Dungurawa’s tenure has been marked by organisational progress and sustained mobilisation, factors it said have strengthened the party’s presence in the state. On this basis, the NWC urged party members to continue recognising him as the authentic state chairman.
The leadership also appealed to NNPP members across Kano State to respect the party constitution and channel grievances through appropriate internal mechanisms rather than resorting to unilateral actions.
Background to the Dispute and Wider Political Context
The controversy began after 27 Gargari Ward executive members reportedly signed a resolution two weeks after the general election, announcing the suspension of Dungurawa over alleged anti-party activities. The accusations included claims that he was creating divisions and instigating internal crises within the party.
Dungurawa has since rejected the action, maintaining that it lacks constitutional backing. In an interview, he asserted that ward executives do not possess the authority to expel or suspend him, adding that his position as a National Executive Committee member further invalidates their claims. He also indicated his readiness to seek legal redress against those he accused of unlawfully parading themselves as party leaders.
The dispute has unfolded amid heightened political tension in Kano State, particularly following rumours that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may defect from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). These speculations have reportedly deepened internal divisions within the party, although no official confirmation has been made regarding any defection.
Reiterating its stance, the NWC called on party members to remain loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP, and to focus on preserving unity and advancing the party’s objectives in Kano State.
