Nigerian Government Denounces NLC and TUC Planned November 14, Strike as Illegal and Irresponsible

Nigerian Government's Victory as Court Halts TUC and NLC November 14 Nationwide Strike

In a press statement released today by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the Nigerian government strongly condemned the decision of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to proceed with a nationwide strike. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have ignited a nationwide strike, defying a restraining order issued by Justice Benedict Backwash Kanyip of the National Industrial Court. This move, announced to commence from midnight, has drawn a strong response from the State House, condemning the decision as an act of defiance against the judiciary.

Nigerian Government‘s Perspective on Personal Vendetta

The Nigerian government, in a strongly-worded statement, expressed dismay at the unions’ decision, characterizing it as an attempt to hold the nation hostage over a personal matter. The incident in question involves the assault on NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, allegedly stemming from an altercation during his attempt to incite workers in Imo State into a strike. The State House views this strike as a disproportionate response, punishing the entire nation for an individual’s grievance.

The Nigerian government acknowledges its commitment to addressing violence against citizens and points to the Inspector General of Police’s initiation of an investigation into the assault on Mr. Ajaero. Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, where the incident occurred, has been transferred, signaling an earnest effort to address the issue at hand.

Abusing Privilege and Disregarding National Interest

The Nigerian government strongly criticizes the NLC and TUC for what it perceives as an abuse of privilege and power. Calling a nationwide strike over a personal matter, despite a clear court order against such industrial action, is viewed as an affront to the rule of law. The statement emphasizes that power, especially at the organizational level, should be employed to foster collective progress and advance national interests, not to settle personal scores.

The Nigerian government contends that the national economy and social activities should not be jeopardized due to the personal interests of a single labour leader. The press release underscores the importance of respecting court orders and the judiciary, and criticizes the organized labor for championing disobedience.

Labour Movement’s Alleged Disregard for Rule of Law Raises Concerns

Historically, the labour movement in Nigeria has positioned itself as a champion of the rule of law and an advocate for the judiciary. However, recent developments surrounding the NLC and TUC’s decision to proceed with a strike despite a court order have raised concerns among government officials.

“We find it deeply ironic that those who have always fought for the rule of law are now seemingly disregarding court orders,” commented Bayo Onanuga. The Nigerian government asserts that the strike action planned by the labor unions is not only illegal but also immoral, unjustifiable, and irresponsible.

Government Accuses Union Leaders of Pursuing Sinister Agenda with Untimely Strike Notice

The government’s criticism extends to the timing of the strike notice, which was issued on Monday night after official working hours. According to Onanuga, this late announcement suggests a hidden agenda aimed at causing undue hardship and civil disturbance in the country.

“We reiterate that this strike action is not in the best interest of the nation. It appears to be designed for a sinister purpose, going beyond the alleged assault on the NLC president,” Onanuga added. The government has called on the unions to reconsider their decision and engage in meaningful dialogue to address their grievances without resorting to actions that may disrupt the nation’s stability.

Upholding National Interests

The State House press statement paints the NLC and TUC‘s strike as a violation of the nation’s interest and a display of disregard for the rule of law. The government’s commitment to addressing the assault on Mr. Ajaero is highlighted, emphasizing the need for responsible and judicious use of power, especially by organized labor. This press release underscores the importance of upholding national interests above personal grievances and the respect for the judiciary’s decisions.

As tensions rise between the Nigerian government and the labor unions, the country watches closely, hoping for a resolution that respects the rule of law and serves the best interests of all parties involved.
