The Nigerian Army has successfully rescued 25 kidnapped victims and recovered 22 rustled cows and nine sheep following a fierce gun battle with armed bandits in Niger State. The operation, which took place on February 21, 2025, was carried out in Garungabas and Kundu villages, Rafi Local Government Area (LGA), as part of intensified efforts to combat banditry and insurgency in the region.
According to intelligence sources, the operation was executed by a joint security task force comprising the Nigerian Army, police, and local vigilante groups. The troops, acting on actionable intelligence about the movement of the bandits, launched an offensive that resulted in the liberation of the abducted individuals, including men and women from various villages.
Fierce Gun Battle Ensures Successful Rescue
Security sources revealed that the operation led to a heavy exchange of gunfire between the security forces and the armed bandits, who had taken the kidnapped victims deep into the forests. The criminals, caught off guard, attempted to resist but were overpowered by the superior firepower of the Nigerian army
“The security team engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, leading to the rescue of 25 victims, including men and women, who had been abducted from nearby villages,” a source disclosed. Many of the rescued victims had been held captive for days, enduring harsh conditions and psychological trauma before their eventual rescue.
During the operation, the troops successfully recovered 22 cows and nine sheep that had been stolen by the criminals. However, several other livestock scattered into the bush in the heat of the confrontation. Security personnel are working with local herders to track and retrieve the remaining animals.
Bandits Attack Commuter Bus, Kill Two Passengers
In a separate incident, suspected bandits launched an attack on a commercial Sharon bus traveling from Sokoto to Minna. The assailants indiscriminately fired at the moving vehicle as it approached their hideout, resulting in the tragic deaths of a male and a female passenger.
Several other passengers sustained injuries from the gunfire and were immediately rushed to the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna for urgent medical attention. Authorities confirmed that the corpses of the deceased were also evacuated for necessary autopsy procedures.
The attack on the commuter bus underscores the persistent security challenges along major highways in northern Nigeria, where bandits frequently target travelers for ransom or indiscriminate violence.
Need for Sustained Military Operations Against Banditry
The recent success of the Nigerian Army in rescuing the kidnapped victims has been widely commended. However, security experts have emphasized the need for continuous military pressure on bandit groups operating in Niger State and other volatile regions.
“It is pertinent for the Nigerian Army to sustain the momentum against the bandits aggressively. Only in an atmosphere of peace and effective security can development be engendered and promoted,” a senior police intelligence officer noted. He further stressed that increased collaboration between security forces and local communities is essential in dismantling bandit networks.
The federal and state governments have been urged to equip security forces with advanced surveillance technology, intelligence-gathering tools, and rapid response capabilities to counteract banditry effectively. Additionally, local vigilante groups and residents must actively support security personnel by providing timely information about criminal activities.
Call for Stronger Synergy Between Nigerian army and Citizens
Stakeholders have called for a more coordinated approach to tackling insecurity, emphasizing the importance of synergy between the Nigerian Army, police, and local communities. According to analysts, while military operations have yielded significant gains, a holistic strategy involving intelligence-sharing, socio-economic interventions, and infrastructural development is needed to address the root causes of banditry.
Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies. Community leaders have also been advised to strengthen local vigilante networks and cooperate with the authorities in intelligence gathering.
As the fight against banditry continues, Nigerians hope that sustained military action, improved security strategies, and enhanced cooperation between the Nigerian army and the people will restore lasting peace to troubled regions.
