Nigeria Police Service Commission PSC has directed the immediate compulsory retirement of four senior Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, namely Dan-Mallam Mohammed, Moses Jitiboh, Hafiz Inuwa, and Adeleke Bode.
These individuals did not retire as expected following the appointment of their colleague, Olukayode Egbetokun, as the acting Inspector-General of Police.
Promotions in Nigeria’s Police Force
However, the PSC has sanctioned the promotion of four Assistant Inspectors-General of Police: Ibrahim Ka’oje, Daniel Sokari-Pedro, Ayuba Ekpeji, and Usman Nagogo, to the position of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police. This promotion is pending ratification by the commission’s board and is intended to fill the vacancies left by the retired DIGs.
Explaining the Directive for DIG Promotions in the Nigeria Police Force
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, the commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, disclosed that the PSC issued this directive in accordance with its statutory authority as outlined in the Third Schedule, Part 1 M, para A&B of the 1999 Constitution, and supplemented by Section 6 of the PSC (Establishment) Act 2001, para a, c, d, e, & f.
Ani clarified that the directive was necessary because the PSC had anticipated the voluntary retirement of those DIGs who held higher ranks than Egbetokun before his appointment as IG. This expectation aligned with the esteemed customs of discipline and structured ethos within the Nigeria Police Force.
