Nigeria Plunged into Darkness: National Power Grid’s Alarming Collapse to 273MW

Nigeria widespread power outage

Nigeria has once again been gripped by a widespread power outage, as the national grid, overseen by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Osogbo, Osun State, experienced a major collapse in electricity supply.

Nigeria Power Grid Suffers Massive Decline in Electricity Capacity, Raising Concerns

Early this morning, The Opitan Global Media (OGM) conducted an investigation, uncovering a startling decline in the national grid’s capacity to a mere 273 megawatts. This power was sourced from just two of the over 27 electricity generation facilities. This sharp drop in electricity supply comes only days after TCN celebrated what appeared to be a dubious 400 days of grid stability.

Multiple Distribution Companies confirmed to The OGM that the electricity grid failure occurred at 00:41 AM, causing most of their feeders to go offline.

Power Grid Plunges to Alarming Lows

As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, only five power plants were contributing to the grid. Afam VI generated a meager 0.70MW, Dadinkowa registered zero generation, Ibom Power provided 32.90MW, Jebba contributed 240MW, while Olorunsogo remained inactive with zero generation.

Around 1 a.m., the national grid’s total power output plummeted to a mere 35MW, indicating a complete collapse of the power system. Subsequently, at approximately 3 a.m., the grid marginally recovered to 193MW before reaching 273MW at the time of this report.

Despite the gravity of the situation, TCN has remained unresponsive to inquiries from our correspondent regarding this critical development, leaving many Nigerians in the dark about the future of their electricity supply.
