Nigeria Customs Service: Nigerian importers planning to bring their goods through Cotonou Ports in Benin Republic will now have the legal freedom to do so. This significant decision was a key outcome of the two-day working visit by Mr. Alain Kinkati, the Director-General of Customs Service of Benin Republic, as revealed in a communique issued following their meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
Nigeria Customs Service Pursues Enhanced Trade Relations with Benin Republic
Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), clarified that the specifics of this framework are currently in progress.
Under this arrangement, goods destined for Nigeria will undergo assessment and payment of appropriate duties in the originating country, with these duties credited to the Nigerian government through the Nigerian Customs Service.
Adeniyi hailed this framework as a significant step forward in sub-regional integration and trade facilitation, fostering collaboration with their counterparts in neighboring Benin Republic. He also announced a substantial reduction in trade corridor barriers, with a commitment to further minimizing checkpoints in collaboration with the police authorities.
Nigeria Customs Service Adopts Advanced IT Integration
Additionally, the Acting Customs boss revealed that plans are in their final stages to align the Customs Service’s Information Technology (IT) system with that of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to combat vehicle smuggling into the country effectively.
Furthermore, he mentioned efforts to harmonize the list of prohibited items with Benin Republic, aiming to enhance the security functions of the organization.
