New LASTMA Boss Vows to Cleanse Corruption and Improve Traffic Management in Lagos

In his inaugural address at (LASTMA) Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s Oshodi Headquarters, Mr. Bakare Oki Olalekan, the newly appointed Acting General Manager, following the sack of the former boss, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba. The new Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) boss outlined his vision for a new era in traffic management for Lagos State. Emphasizing the need for civility, empathy, and a zero-tolerance policy for corruption, Mr. Oki set the tone for a transformative approach to the agency’s duties.

Mr. Oki’s commitment to ensuring a seamless experience for commuters across the state was evident as he addressed Lastma Comptrollers, Commanders, and Zebras. The call for a corruption-free LASTMA, coupled with an emphasis on respectful and courteous interactions with traffic offenders, reflects a strong dedication to rebuilding the agency’s public image.

Upholding Integrity and Professionalism

Highlighting the importance of integrity and professionalism, the Acting General Manager underscored the public’s expectation of a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority that operates without collecting bribes. This commitment extends to enforcing discipline within the agency, with a specific focus on eradicating laziness and ensuring punctuality among officers.

Under Mr. Oki’s leadership, there is a promise of a major reorganization within the Provost/Surveillance Department. This move aims to enhance the monitoring of LASTMA personnel during their duties, reinforcing the commitment to effective and efficient traffic management.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has long been a controversial figure, marred by allegations of corruption that have tainted its reputation. Over the years, LASTMA officials have been accused of engaging in corrupt practices, ranging from extorting motorists to turning a blind eye to traffic offenses in exchange for bribes. These illicit activities have not only undermined the agency’s primary objective of ensuring traffic order but have also eroded public trust in the institution.

The pervasiveness of corruption within LASTMA became especially evident in the past, where tales of officers demanding bribes at checkpoints or fabricating offenses to extort money were not uncommon. Such corrupt practices not only hindered the smooth flow of traffic but also contributed to a culture of lawlessness on Lagos streets. The consequences of this systemic corruption were felt by ordinary citizens who, rather than relying on the justice system, often found themselves compelled to navigate a web of bribery to avoid legal consequences or secure preferential treatment.

Rebuilding public trust and ensuring the integrity of traffic management remains a formidable challenge, requiring sustained commitment to eradicating corrupt practices and fostering a culture of accountability within the organization. The tale of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s past corruption serves as a cautionary reminder of the detrimental impact of institutionalized dishonesty on the fabric of a society striving for order and fairness on its roads.

Conducive Work Environment and Training Initiatives

Mr. Oki pledged to create a conducive working environment for LASTMA officers and implement comprehensive training schemes aligned with international standards. This commitment reflects a proactive approach to equipping officers with the necessary skills and knowledge for optimal performance in traffic management.

The emphasis on meeting international standards and best practices indicates a forward-looking strategy to position LASTMA as a benchmark in traffic management within and beyond Lagos State.

Warning to Motoring Public: Government Commitment to Personnel Welfare

Assuring the safety, welfare, and rights of personnel on duty, Mr. Oki expressed the government’s commitment to supporting LASTMA officers.
